Happy 15th Birthday for CJS
Now that I have been retired for nearly 3 years, it's lovely to take an occasional peek at the CJS to see how it is getting alongwithout me. The CJS Blog keeps me informed about the week to week progress, and it also links to the latest CJS Focus andany other major developments. It's wonderful to watch the CJS going from strength to strength after 15 years and Wow - howit has grown over the years! The CJS all began as a little acorn in July 1994 when Anthea and I published the first CJS Weekly on a tiny little BBCcomputer with less computing power than today's average mobile phone. The 9-pin dot matrix printer got so hot that we had topause after every five copies, to let it cool down again. In the early months we printed the CJS Weekly on continuouscomputer print-out paper, which then had to be torn off across the perforations after every complete set. That job was badenough, but then all the side strips, with the printer sprocket holes in, had to be torn off as well. Oh the hours of fun we had! When the ever growing heap of envelopes was ready to post, we would drive into town late on Saturday nights, only todiscover 'the night time economy' of Whitby. This was entirely new to us and a world which we country dwellers wot not of.Scantily clad young ladies dashed through the sleet and the snow as they moved from pub to pub and then to club. Weconsidered offering them our space blanket, but clearly they had so much alcohol in their systems that hypothermia wasimpossible. Drunken yobs would ask us why we were stuffing crates full of big envelopes into the only double capacity pillar box in town (which just happened to be next to the only night club in town) and we would laugh it off with a 'We're posting earlyfor Christmas!' This usually worked, but we always worried that sooner or later some drunken fool might throw hundreds of that week's edition into the harbour. Happily, it never happened. As the CJS continued to grow over the years, the local Royal Mail staff were more than helpful and Sunday morning pick-upswere arranged from our home-office. More subscribers meant more typing and we engaged staff to help us cope. Choosingthe right staff is always critical to any business and I am delighted to say that the same people we employed 'way back then, are still running the CJS today. It is thanks to their skill, dedication, hard work and ingenuity that the CJS has survived andthrived.Did I mention staff ingenuity? When we all relied on floppy discs to transfer information (and long before computers werenetworked), how would
you
get half the week's job details on one computer onto the other computer, when the disc drivefailed late on publication day? The answer, of course, was to email it from one side of the office, via several city hubs,Goonhilly and the odd satellite, to the computer on the other side of the room – brilliant! After 15 years of the CJS I'm delighted that it still has a strong ethical approach - and a lower Carbon footprint than ever before. I'm so proud that the little CJS acorn we planted in July 1994 has now grown into such a fine young Oak. Long mayCJS continue to grow and mature as a vital part of a healthy environment.Wishing CJS every success for the next 15 years!Niall Carson (CJS Editor 1994 – 2006)REF 2210-MONTHLY-10/8 JOB
