Oakridge Back 2 School Bash III
By Tracy Griess
“Why do you need all of those school supplies?” “What willyou do with 250 packages of dry erase markers?” These ques-tions, as well as several others regarding school supplies, wereasked in the last several days. As a mother of three who has beenfilling school supply lists for nine years, it never occurred to methat the items we were asking for were out of the ordinary. Thanyou for your questions—let’s try to clear things up a bit.A typical supply list for an elementary student includes thebasics such as pens, pencils, crayons, markers, paper and a back pack, but now also includes sticky notes, Kleenex, zip lock bag-gies, glue sticks, dry erase markers, at least6 -10 two pocket folders, spiral notebooks,three-ring binders and highlighters. If youare not a shopper who looks at every adand then maps out a route to three or fourdifferent stores to get the absolute best dealon every item, but prefer to simply walk into your local discount store and makeone purchase to fill your child’s list, youwill easily spend $50-$100 per child. So… back to the original question,“Why do you need all those schoolsupplies?” Our neighbors at Oakridgesimply are not able to afford all the schoolsupplies for their children. Our goal is toprovide back packs for their children thatinclude a few of the items from a typicallist. The supply list was divided among thechurches involved in this outreach eventwith the hope of making the shoppingeasier, as well as increasing the likelihoodof being able to fill the packs completelyfrom donations. We have only ONE WEEK left to fillthose packs. There are some great dealsout there on school supplies. We especiallyneed dry erase markers and highlighters. If each of us purchased acouple of things, those packs would be filled. If you are not a shop-per you can make a donation by simply writing “back packs” onyour offering envelope. We will be thrilled to do the shopping foryou. The back packs have been purchased, now all we need is you!In addition to the back pack supplies, we are in need of volunteers at the event. This is a “must serve” event. Like a “mustsee” event you will spend a few hours watching God at work aswe eat, play and mingle with our neighbors. Come be a part of something inspiring right here in our city.

Making and Keeping Commitments
Sundays | August 2, 9 & 16 | Room 108 | 6
PM
By Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries
On my shelf is a book titled “TheStarter Marriage.” In the book, socialresearcher Pamela Paul has compileddata on why young people are jump-ing into and out of marriages—oftento trade up to “something better.” In treating a starter-marriagelike a starter-home, couples can learn a lot about what to look forand what to avoid the next time around.Unfortunately, in our disposable society attitudes like thisare commonplace. Making and then breaking commitments hasbecome the fabric of many lives. It should not be so for peoplewho have trusted in Jesus. In fact, Matthew, who wrote the firstbook in the New Testament, upheld the value of your commit-ment, of your word. He wrote, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your‘No’ be ‘No.’”One commitment you can make and stand by is the commit-ment to become a member of the church. Our Fellowship EntryPoint class can assist you in taking this step. If you would like toexplore making this commitment to this church you can sign upfor the August 2, 9 & 16 class (6
PM
| Room 108) on the Care &Communication Card today.
