September 2007At the time o writing I am orty-six years old. My name is DuroKolak.Laura came to Gost in the last week o July. I was the rst to see her the morning she drove into town. From the hillside you have a viewo the road, one o the three that lead into town: the rst comesdirect rom the north, the second and third rom the south-east andthe south-west respectively. The car was on the road that comesrom the south-west, rom the coast. An early sun had burned o most o the mist and on a day like this the deer might be encouragedto leave the woods and come down the hill, so I’d turned back toetch my rie even though it was not the season to hunt.I’d chosen my spot and laid out my breakast. On the branch o a tree a collared dove rested out o view o the alcon soaringabove. I trailed the bird lazily through my rie sights and that waswhen I noticed the car. A large, newish our-wheel drive, beingdriven very slowly down an entirely empty road as though thedriver was searching or a concealed entrance. I lowered the gun sothat I had the vehicle ully in my sights but the angle and reectiono the sun made it impossible to see who was driving.An hour later I was on the road home carrying my gun and anempty bag.
