A rt & Design is a natural outgrowth of human need of having to fathom, ex-

plore, investigate, and experience visual as well as subjective tactile expressions
marked, inked, printed, drawn on paper and the play on colors, textures, theme to
equally match the content and substance of what is being expressed...with endless variety.

To be able to disseminate art whether objectively and subjectively into a cornucopia of visual
arts and design while effectively pushing the ante in mass communications – is my mission.

larger quarters at 90 LaSalle Street. The
move was shortlived; two years later,
the building was destroyed in the Great
Chicago Fire.

Wisconsin lumber shipped in via
Lake Michigan, Chicago had
been plagued by fires from its earliest
days.
But the fire that erupted on the
night of October 8, 1871, was unlike
lumberyards along the South Branch of
the Chicago River. Soon it leaped
across the river and roared into the
central business district burning its way
to the Near North Side.
Lyman Baird was awakened by the
watchman at his home at 1119 North
LaSalle Street early on the morning of

found ablaze. Returning home, he
barely made it across the river, forced
to crawl through part of the passage
because of the dense smoke.
What happened then has become
family legend:

Although the building was destroyed, the

firm’s safe and its records were found
unharmed. They were critical in enabling
the city to rebuild swiftly after the unprece-
dented disaster.
