How to Revise a Paper in Nine Easy Steps
Step One: Forget about the grade
. The object is to keep working on your skills. Worrying about the gradeis nothing more that trying to guess the minimum amount of worknecessary to change the grade!
Step Two: Print another copy of the paper
.Read the clean copy all the way through without making ANY MARKS atall and without comparing the clean copy to the graded one. (In fact, you’re safer if there isn’t a pen in the room.)
Step Three: Outline your paper.
Outline your paper using the most formal method you know. This willlet you see a skeleton of your essay. Look for inconsistencies, errors inlogical reasoning, fallacies, and awkward transitions as you write.
Step Four: Read the marginal comments on your graded paper
.Now is the time to read my comments and see if they match theinconsistencies or problems you found in your paper while outlining. If you don’t understand my comments, don’t second guess me---ask me.
Step Five: Make notes on your clean copy
.Now you revise the paper for content and organization. Work on the bigpicture.
Step Six: Type it
.Retype with your content and organizational revisions.
