from the newsletter of the Unofficial Tradi-tional Catholic Gregorian Chant Medieval TEX User Group.A note for the confused: members are encouraged to useTEX and Gregorian Chant but we don’t make it a requirementof membership. Anyone is welcome to join, distribute newslet-ters, manufacture badges, T-shirts and other silly merchandise.
Aims of the Unofficial Traditional Catholic GregorianChant Medieval TEX User Group.
To work on gregorian chant typing. To puzzle over the complexities of the chant, OpusTEX andthe Liturgy. To make illustrations, fonts, books, web pages and othersuch things to better present the chant. To find out all the reasons why people don’t use the chantalready. To pursue recordings of the chant.Looking at that list I feel overwhelmed already. I am surethere are other groups out there tackling these areas. Solesmesare producing books and recordings, so was Holger of noctur-nale.de (Does anyone know what happened to his software?)So why are we expending time and breath on a rather obso-lete typesetting system?OpusTEX is built on what is possibly the only bug-free pro-gram of it’s size. As for OpusTEX itself, any bugs should be fix-able as the source code is open. I think it is worth helping makeOpusTEX work. Why don’t we leave it to the experts? The experts will do it the expert’s way. There are lots of scholarly works on chant and a growing number of beginnerbooks. As one of the few choirs actually immersed in chant theSchola Sanctae Crucis has a good angle on the practical side of things. As lay volunteers we have much latitude to experimentand come up with new ideas. What’s so great about Gregorian Chant?Would someone like to do a brief trawl through the relevantdocuments to make summary of all the juicy quotes pertainingto chant? Another project could be a history punctuated withexamples of chant, eg. Golden Age, Ambrosian, Melismatic, Or-ganum, Rhyming, Metered.
