The ALLEN THEATRE, 1501 Euclid Ave.,opened on 1 Apr. 1921. It joined the Ohio,State, and Hanna theaters, which haddebuted only weeks before. The Allen wasconstructed in conjunction with the BulkleyBldg., an 8-story office building on EuclidAve., just east of E. 14th St. Designed byarchitect C. Howard Crane, the $1 millionshowplace was developed by 2 Canadiantheater impresarios, Jules and Jay Allen ofToronto. An ornate lobby led to a pillared ItalianRenaissance rotunda, its dome 33' high. Thebalcony seating area was reached fromanother domed entrance hall, while yet athird dome graced the main arena.Altogether, the Allen could seat 3,003 inopulent surroundings. Because the Allenbrothers were not affiliated with a majormotion-picture circuit, they experienceddifficulty in securing first-run features.In. 1923
Loew’s
took it over when FamousPlayers of Canada took over all the Allenchain in Canada. In 1932 RKO took over. In1949 Warner Bros. joined in the theater'smanagement, and finally, in 1953 Stanley-Warner Theatres assumed the lease. Despitethe expenditure of $500,000 in 1961 torenovate the Allen, diminishing audiencesled to Stanley-Warner's decision to close thetheater on 5 Mar. 1968.Although the Allen hosted some of theearliest events in the campaign to restoreCleveland's PLAYHOUSE SQUARE, it wasnearly lost amid the subsequent festivitiessurrounding the reopening of its 3neighbors, the OHIO THEATER, STATETHEATER, and PALACE THEATER. For severalyears it housed a restaurant in its lobby, butdemolition had already begun in Jan. 1993,when the Playhouse Square Assn. signed along-term lease to preserve the Allen aspart of its downtown theater complex.

I just found the "Cleveland Movie Theatre" page. I noticed that the Detroit Theatre in Lakewood, Ohio is missing from the list. As far as I know, it is still owned by General Theatres of Cleveland, OH.

The Detroit Theatre is on page 30.
