It seems that just about everyone these days is looking for something or someone to be identified with—something that’sin, something of value, something bigger than life.T-shirts and jeans sporting Nike

and other designer logosare everywhere, from Moscow to Mumbai and Tallahassee toTimbuktu. Teenagers and twenty-somethings imitate the dress, attitudes, and language of their favorite rock or film stars, while their parents slave and save for their dream houseor the car that’s “really them.” Passions reach a fever pitchand much of the world goes on hold for events such asthe World Cup. Sports stars become international icons, andprofessional sports gear and memorabilia is a multibilliondollar industry. Against this backdrop, isn’t it strange—and sad—that sofew people seem to want to be identified with the One who is

The
Greatest? Just look at all Jesus is and has to offer:He was with God at Creation, and
all things were madethrough Him. In Him was life, and the life was the light ofmen
(John 1:3

that’s
big! He took our sins uponHimself and died for us, so we can live forever in Heaven. Noone else could do that! He gives real meaning and purposeto life. Who else can do that? And He loves each of uspersonally, no matter what. What could be better than that?Who or what do you want others to identify you with? Why be a walking advertisement for some marketing mogulor momentary superstar when you can stand up and becounted with the One who

CHAINED EAGLE
M
any people resolve to do this or that, change thisor that, break a bad habit, or start a new one. Some-times it works; often it doesn’t. Is that because somany of us are like the bird in the following story? A man once owned an eagle, and for many yearskept him chained to a stake. Every day the eagle walkedaround and around that stake, and over time wore a rut in theground. When the eagle was getting old, his master felt sorrfor him and decided to set him free. So he took the metalring off the eagle’s foot, lifted the eagle from the ground, andtossed him into the air. He was free—but he had forgottenhow to fly! He flip-flopped to the ground, walked back over tohis old rut, and started walking in circles like he had for years. No chain and shackle held him, just the habit! There is a saying: “The chains of bad habits are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken”—and that would be true if it weren’t for the Lord and His power. It’s notpossible for you to change yourself, but it’s possible for Godto change you by the miracle-working power of His Spirit. He’ll do things you can’t do! You may have to put a great deal of your own will to thetransformation process as well, but with God’s strength andHis intervention, you’ll find you have more resolve, deter-mination, and ability to change than you ever thought pos-sible. He said, “Whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you willreceive” (Matthew 21:22).This is what it means to “become a new creature in ChristJesus” (2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV). Jesus coming into your lifenot only renews and purifies and regenerates your spirit, butit also renews your mind, literally breaking old connectionsand reflexes and gradually rebuilding it and rewiring it into a whole new computer system with a different outlook on lifeand a new way of looking at the world, with new reactions tonearly everything around you.But it’s impossible for you to make this change yourself. If you want this change, it’s necessary for you to ask Jesus tohelp. Some changes are instantaneous, others take awhile.—But if you ask Him for help and do your part, you’ll bechanged, because Jesus changes people!
