Applepalooza a sweet addition to the Apple Festival

BY JASMINE CUPP Every year the second full weekend in October Oak Harbor holds its annual Apple Festival. This year the 35th annual celebration was held Oct. 11-13. The festival hosts the Apple Run 5k, a parade, baking contests, kiddie tractor pulls, food vendors, local apple orchard vendors, rides, entertainment and more. This year there was a revival of after-hours entertainment called Applepalooza. The event is a collaboration with the Oak Harbor Chamber, said Applepalooza creator and Apple Festival chairperson Carolyn Rodenhauser. We approached local businesses to see if there was an interest and Community Markets stepped right up to the plate. Rodenhauser said that she wanted to have better entertainment at night for the Apple Festival to draw more people downtown for the event. The Apple Festival and Applepalooza are good for the community and its what the community needs, Rodenhauser explained. At 7 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 12, Last Born Sons played and were followed by the Junk playing from 10 p.m.-1 a.m. Over 1000 wrist bands were sold for the Applepalooza event which started at 4 p.m. Fifty volunteers from the Oak Harbor, Port Clinton and Fremont areas helped to make the event happen. Sponsors for the event included Community Markets, Crogan Colonial Bank, Valeries, Radiant Window and Remodeling, Todd Puckett of State Farm, Centurion Technologies and First National Bank. As for the Apple Festival overall, Valerie Winterfield, president of the Oak Harbor Chamber, on Friday said they expected 20,000 people to attend the festival throughout the weekend. With the weather being so beautiful, were going to have a great event, said Winterfield. And it was. More photos online at thebeacon.net.

The Lighthouse Festival

BY DONNA LUEKE The Lighthouse Festival in Lakeside and Marblehead celebrated the bounty and the beauty of a perfect fall weekend in Ottawa County; the majesty of the Marblehead lighthouse; the talents of local entertainers, cooks, vendors, artisans and reenactors; the simple pleasures of childhood; and the hospitality and camaraderie of friends and neighbors. According to Marblehead Chamber of Commerce President Mary Ann Hirsch, the weekend was a huge success all the way around, for the whole peninsula, festival locations and local businesses. Shuttle drivers reported that there were many first-timers to the festival and to Lakeside and Marblehead, and that many of them expressed awe at the event and the locale. This year there were more thant 100 vendors, more than 60 pumpkin contest entries, and more than 270 children participated in the kids crafts. The popular sailboat rides and hayrides sold out, as did the Mens Club and Methodist Church food concessions. To experience or relive sights of the festivals, go to the photo galleries at www.thebeacon.net.

I received a note from Dean Rothaar, PCHS Graduate from the class of 1968. He recently visited with classmate Jackie Robinson who is a resident at the Arizona Veterans Home. Jackie suffered a stroke some time ago which has affected his speech and mobility. He also lost a leg to diabetes. However, according to Dean, he still has that great smile and infectious laugh that many of his classmates will remember. Jackie didnt graduate from PCHS, as he moved to Arizona after the Erie Army Depot closed in 1966. He went on to become a 3-sport star for Yuma High School. Thank you from Friends of the Cemeteries
The Port Clinton Friends of the Cemeteries would like to once again thank the many people who have supported us with monetary donations from our most recent annual letter appeal. Special thanks to the Ottawa County Community Foundation for awarding us grant money towards our road paving project. Thank you Larry Hartlaub and Dupps Printing for your donation to our chicken BBQ and to all who purchased dinners and made it a success. And to the Port Clinton city workers who placed the refuse foundations and installed the section marker posts in both cemeteries, your work is greatly appreciated. The Port Clinton Friends of the Cemeteries would like to clarify what seems to be a misunderstanding of our powers within the cemeteries. We need it known that we have no control over the mowing or the trimming as this is the sole responsibility of the city. With that being said we would strongly encourage anyone who has issues in this matter to please call the city and let them know your concerns. Please continue to share your ideas and concerns with us. Your thoughts and ideas are vital as we move forward to prioritize what is needed to sustain the dignity of our cemeteries. With gratitude, Dana Alvarez, President Port Clinton Friends of the Cemeteries forward with our lives. A little over a year ago we imagined a place of solitude, a place to reflect and a place to remember our children. We wanted to create a place to soften the sadness of visitors who needed a special place to honor the memory of their child. Our dreams came true last year when we were granted permission to build such a place at the southwest corner of Lakeview Park. Our Childrens Memorial became a reality. It is a parents biggest fear that their child will be forgotten. As we look at the names inscribed on the pavers at our Childrens Memorial, we know that they will always be remembered. Many years from now, visitors will know who our children were. They did exist. This Childrens Memorial is not only for our children, but all of the children in this area who have died. The legacy of the children, a legacy of

AROUND OTTAWA COUNTY

BY JASMINE CUPP The Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce and the Business and Professional Women sponsored Candidates Night at the Elks Lodge on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. Candidates had an opportunity to talk for five minutes, telling the voters their stories, why they wanted to run and what they would do for their communities if elected. Some of the candidates are younger citizens of Port Clinton who graduated from Port Clinton High School. Cole Hatfield and Bert Fall, both running for auditor, and Gabe Below, running unopposed in ward four, are Port Clinton graduates and expressed a passion for helping the city grow to its potential. Below, who works at a government relations firm out of Cleveland and travels frequently in that position, said that he has an opportunity to see what other communities are doing and in turn that will help Port Clinton. Below also said that the city needs to concentrate on population growth and needs to at-

tract younger families to the city. Many, if not all, the candidates expressed their desire to give back and contribute to their community. Hatfield said, I was raised here, I work here, I want to raise my family here and I want to contribute to the community. Fall also spoke of contributing to the community, I am more than someone who can just balance the books. Hot topics of the evening included new sewer lines and, of course, Waterworks Park. All the Pot Clinton candidates supported the development of Waterworks Park, but some were skeptical of the lack of a structured plan. Most candidates said they would approve of a plan only if it was concrete and wasnt a prototype or concept. In the October 31 issue of the Beacon, candidate profiles for contested seats will be featured. Voting takes place on Nov. 5. Here are the issues that will be on the Ottawa County ballot:

BSBO celebrates 20th anniversary

BY DONNA LUEKE On Saturday evening at the Catawba Island Club, Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) celebrated 20 years of bird conservation. The evening honored BSBO, its volunteers and featured keynote speaker Joe Duff, co-founder and CEO of Operation Migration. Guy Denny, retired chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and President of the Ohio Natural Areas and Preserves Association, was the Master of Ceremony for the evening. Kim Kaufman, Executive Director of BSBO, the premier birding organization in the state of Ohio, reviewed the meteoric rise of the organization since its founding on the living room floor of Mark and Julie Shieldcastle. The BSBO is now housed in offices at the entrance of Magee Marsh Wildlife Area near Oak Harbor. BSBO PROGRAMS BSBO was founded on research and that remains its cornerstone. They have been studying hawk migration for 18 years and the migration of herons and egrets and butterflies (honorary birds). Recently BSBO was instrumental in establishing a large section of Lake Erie marshlands recently dedicated as a Regional Shorebird Reserve. Through this designation, these marshlands became part of a global network protecting an estimated five million acres of habitat and 30 million shorebirds. The Lake Erie Marshland Reserve is only the second such reserve in the Midwest and the first in the Great Lakes to receive this designation. The Navarre Marsh banding station near Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, the largest bird banding station in the country, has banded over 571,000 birds. The Ohio Winter Bird Atlas is nearing completion and will be the first in the country, the culmination of 8,000 volunteer hours and a decade of efforts. Education If research is the brain of BSBO, education is the heart, said Kim. They have established Nature Camp, Young Explorers, Wetland Investigation Network, and programs for teacher education. The Ohio Young Birders Club was started with 6 kids seven years ago and is being embraced by other states as the prototype for establishing their young birders clubs. Other programs of BSBO include working on a Spanish language bird guide, working with the Black Swamp Birds and Business Alliance, and the new Birding Ohio Facebook page that has now 2,000 followers. The Focus on Diversity Conference has as its mission changing the face of conservation. It has been said that you cant build a birder without building a conservationist. BSBO supports alternative energy while lobbying and educating about the dangers of windmills in bird flyways. They lobby and educate about the detrimental effects to birds of balloon releases and outdoor cats. BSBO has been featured on television programs Dirty Jobs and CBS Sunday Morning. Yet perhaps no BSBO program has more of an impact on our area than The Biggest Week in American Birding, the largest birder festival in the country, that each spring brings 80,000 birders to the area and contributes an estimated $37 million to the local economy. Kim emphasized that it is not the birders that bring the birds here, it is the habitat. In personalizing the impact of BSBO, Kim shared that it is perhaps best dramatized by the transformation of a tough city kid that held a blue jay and then became a teacher to fellow students about his newfound bird friend, or by the blackpoll warbler (a bird that each year migrates from the far north to South America) that was banded at the Navarre station and returned to the same station five years later, or by the new birder that said, Birding has changed my life. Thanks for giving me a purpose. I am so grateful. Kenn Kaufman, author of birding guides and international birding authority, added emphasis when he said, Some of the finest people in the world are birders. His new mission is to promote the conservation of migratory species, through innovative research, education and partnership. Duff believes that conservation and habitat preservation is the most important issue facing the world. Duff and his team conducted the first human-led bird migration, using two ultralight aircraft to lead 18 Canada Geese from Ontario to Virginia. The success of this initial study led to the founding of the non-priofit Operation Migration in Canada in 1994, the making of the movie with Columbia Pictures Fly Away Home in 1995, and the founding of Operation Migration in the United States in 1998. The Whooping Crane project Operation Migrations current project is leading the migration of whooping cranes 2500 miles from Wood Buffalo Park in Canada to Southern Texas and Florida, using three ultralights. The endangered whooping crane, a bird that has links to the dinosaurs and that has been around for millions of years, has a population of only 170-300 in the wild. Efforts to raise them in captivity have not been successful. The Operation Migration process Whooping crane eggs are hatched at Patuxent National Wildlife Center in ??Virginia. Whooping crane sounds are played to the birds while they are still in the egg. Once hatched, the fledglings must imprint with adult whooping cranes, and cannot be imprinting with people or other types of birds. Any people who are around the birds must wear special disguising outfits, not only when they are young but throughout the migration process. It is vital to the survival of the birds that they not imprint with humans and that they maintain a fear of humans. The young birds are transported to Wisconsin by private plane. In Wisconsin, the birds learn to fly a little at a time, led by the ultralights. In the cranes world, the planes and the disguised people are just other birds. There are many dominance contests among the birds and with the planes and disguised handlers. It is fun to deal with the birds on their level, with a bird that is five feet tall, says Duff. Once the birds are strong enough and experienced enough to fly, the migration begins. Like geese, the birds fly in a V, following the lead aircraft, with the lead bird doing the work until it tires and another bird takes the lead. The birds fly off the vorteces of the ultralights wingtips. Duff equates the flights to an aerial rodeo, with the following aircraft leading birds that fall behind. For three months, Operation Migration leads the cranes south, stopping at pre-set locations donated by very generous people that have the appropriate habitat. The birds are always kept away from people and noise. At each stop, pens are set up for the cranes for that night. Once they arrive at their southern preserve, the cranes go through a gentle release process, protected in pens part of the time, and gradually released out into the swamp longer each day. Though it takes three months to lead the whopping cranes south, when they return on their own, the birds make it in about eight days. It is humbling, says Duff. Craneiac facts The Operation Migration crew travels with four motor homes, portable pens and

At the end of the migration hundreds of Craneiacs flock to greet Operation Migration, though the birds are kept isolated on their preserve. The Wisconsin location had to be changed because black flies drove the birds off their nests. When former President and First Lady Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter expressed interest in seeing Operation Migration as it traveled near Plains, GA, they were outfitted in camouflage and hidden in the woods. The Disney Fund is a big supporter of Operation Migration. One of the whooping crane destinations is near Tallahassee, FL, and the other near Crystal River, FL. Last year the first natural whooping crane nest in the Eastern flyway since 1878 was established at one of the preserves. The ultralight Trikes are very simple airplanes that weigh about 400 pounds, travel at 38 m.p.h., and have only one moving part. One of the Operation Migration aircraft is in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Up to 20 whopping cranes a year are escorted by Operation Migration. There are now about 100 whooping cranes migrating. The birds are half wild. The next plan is to get many of the whooping crane eggs from native nests in Wood Buffalo National Park to preserve more of their wildness. This whole earth is like a machine. Marshes and species all mesh together. It is critical to protect the wetlands, says Duff. If you are saving a species like the whooping crane, we are saving habitat. The Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education took up forward looking action and discussion items at its regular meeting held on Tuesday, Sept. 24th. First, Board members highlighted the efforts of the Rocket Soccer Complex Improvement Committee and a recent donation it received from Bechtel Corporation, a lead contractor on work currently being done at Davis-Besse Power Plant. Mr. Roger Fulwiler of Bechtel Corporation addressed the Board members and audience about Bechtels willingness to be a part of meaningful and worthy projects that benefit the communities they work in. Board members expressed their thanks to Bechtel Corporation for their con-

tinued support of B-C-S School District, which included a past donation of $5,000 to benefit the Music Department. Also, the Board discussed that information was being placed around the district informing voters of two renewal levies that will be on the November 5th ballot. These renewal levies include a 3.9 mill operating levy renewal, which was originally passed in August 2000. This levy generates approximately $1.3 million per year. The other levy up for renewal is a 1.2 mill permanent improvement levy that was originally passed in November 1979this levy generates approximately $175,000 per year. Passage of these two renewal levies will result in NO new taxes for citizens. In other business, the Board approved several personnel recommendations from the superintendent, including issuing supplemental contracts to teachers to serve as mentors for newer teachers. B-C-S and districts around the state have utilized a mentoring program to support teachers to help them navigate the many dimensions of the teaching profession. The Board also approved coaching staff for winter sports. The B-C-S Board of Education also had a formal first reading of revisions to ten Board policiesThe Board also formally approved a purchase agreement for the sale of the Graytown School building and property to North Point Educational Service Center. In discussion items, Mr. Travis Magato, B-C-S Band Director, made a presentation to Board members regarding a fundraising effort that is underway to purchase new band uniforms. Mr. Magato explained that the Oak Harbor Band Department and the B-C-S Music Boosters have taken exceptional care of current band uniforms, which extended their life well beyond what was expected. Moreover, the B-C-S Music Boosters, who have been diligently saving money, have committed up to $25,000 toward the fundraising campaign. The approximate cost of the new band uniforms is $51,000. To contribute to the band uniform fundraising effort, visit OakHarborBands.com. In other discussion items, Mr. Parmigian and Mrs. Priesman discussed and solicited feedback from Board members about the development of a more up to date

The superintendent also discussed the development of a five year strategic plan and vision for the district. Mr. Parmigian explained that he had had initial discussions with the administrative team about the strategic plan, and believed that the strategic plan should be clear, concise, and easy to communicate to all district stakeholders. Finally, Mr. Parmigian and the Board discussed the new legislative requirement that the Board appoint a business advisory council. The Board determined that the districts current Finance Committee could also serve in the capacity of the districts business advisory council. The next regular B-C-S Board of Education meeting will be held at 6 p.m.on Tuesday, October 22, at the Board of Education Office.

Third graders learn about fire safety

Benton-Carroll-Salem schools third graders were invited to the Carroll Township Fire/ EMS Department on Friday, Oct. 4, to learn about fire safety. The Carroll Township Fire Department, Life Flight, First Energy, Ohio State Highway Patrol, St. Vincents, ProMedica, Ottawa County EMA, and Materion all donated their time to make the day possible. The students moved through stations where they took part in hands-on activities to learn about fire safety and to see actual fire/EMS equipment that is used in emergencies. The students were thrilled when Life Flight arrived and they were able to get a close up view of the inside the helicopter. The day ended with the Carroll Township Fire Department putting out a real structure fire as the third graders watched them at work. It was a memorable day for the third graders. They left with new knowledge of how to be safe at home, or anywhere, should there be a fire.

Healing Lake Erie with in-stream sediment collectors

BY DONNA LUEKE One of the major problems for Lake Erie is the runoff that happens when there is a heavy rain. The soil runs off the fields and yards, into the streams and rivers, and out to the lake, carrying with it soil and nutrients, some of which also contribute to algae blooms. The farmer loses valuable topsoil and nutrients. The streams and lake fill with silt, damaging fish and wildlife habitat and necessitating dredging that further damages stream and lake beds and shorelines. Dwight and Lisa Clary are life long, full-time grain farmers from Kansas, Ohio. Their land feeds into the Muskellunge, a tributary that feeds into the Sandusky River north of Fremont. They practice conservation agriculture, their term for using the best possible practices for the farmer and the land and waters. They have been practicing 100% no-till farming for 31 years, and plant cover crops to hold the soil and nutrients over the winter. The Clarys saw a need and an opportunity, and, in the 16 hours a day riding on a tractor came up with the concept for the Clary In-Stream Sediment Collector. The idea came over time. From concept to construction, it took us 10 years, says Dwight. The first one was built in the fall of 2010. Simply stated, the collector is placed in the bed of a feeder stream where it collects sediments. The collected sediment is removed about twice a year and the valuable topsoil and nutrients are returned to the fields. By collecting the sediment before it passes through cities, the sediment does not become contaminated and

therefore can be returned to the land. By keeping the streams healthy, there is no need to strip vegetation and river bottoms as streams become blocked. The goal, says Clary, is to systematically and strategically install (the collectors) in sub-watersheds, so that the stream will drop its load of sediment where nature wants to, restoring the natural profile of the stream. In the 2200 miles of sub-watershed streams of the Sandusky watershed, if 1000 collectors are installed, at least 100,000 tons per year of sediment would be removed, enough to cover 100 acres six inches deep. Who would benefit? The farmers, by retaining and returning soil and nutrients, improved drainage The townships, counties, state and US governments, improvements in highways and bridges The cities, lower cost to clean drinking water Soil and Water Conservation Districts, lower cost of ditch maintenance Private marinas, lower cost of dredging Sportsmen and recreational boaters, healthier streams, rivers and lakes Wildlife, improved habitat The cost The Clarys are giving away the technology, giving back the soil and the nutrients and giving back to the environment, and giving to the generations to come. They are not applying for a patent or a grant, and therefore have been able to move more swiftly. The collectors are built with volunteer labor. Donations have been made by communitybased groups. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is a cosponsor. A contractor has bid to build the collectors for $10,000 each. The cost can be brought down by precasting and by the quantities of scale. Dwight estimates that they may be able to cut that cost in half. Compared to conventional and controversial stream clearing, which costs about

$1.50 per foot or $16,000 per mile, that results in stripped banks and streambeds, and that has to be frequently repeated, the collectors are a much more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solution. It is estimated the stream-collector boxes will last about 100 years, and the only maintenance is the emptying of sediment twice a year. This system works with nature, leaving a small footprint on the stream system, says Clary. Emily emphasized,We are not doing this to make money. We want to contribute, and to stay ahead of being regulated, by doing something that is economically and environmentally viable.

Going forward The Sandusky River Watershed Coalition & Heidelberg University in Tiffin are working together to get a grant to build two more Clary In-Stream Sediment Collectors in the Muskellunge and do research on those two as well as the one that is already there. Becks Hybrids (a privately owned seed company from Indiana) bought a farm next to the OSU-connected Farm Science Review about 20 miles west of Columbus, (along I-70) They plan to build a collector there and hope to have research done on it. A farmer from Ottawa County is going to build a collector on the stream on his farm. Erie County Soil and Water Conservation District representatives are exploring ways to build several collectors in Erie County. The West Virginia EPA heard about the collectors and visited to learn about them for the part of the state that drains into the Potomac River which drains into the Chesapeake Bay, a distressed watershed. A representative from New York State is exploring the use of the collectors to improve the drinking water in the New York City water reservoir. There have also been calls from Minnesota and from Michigan Trout Fishermen. The Clarys welcome visitors, and have had groups visit from as far away as England. At their Thurs. Oct. 17th Thurs. love and caring will always be felt at the Childrens Memorial. This is our gift to the community, our way of saying thank you for the support we have received. Its our way of saying that we care about all of the children who have died and their families. Maybe you will visit our Childrens Memorial one day and sit in the shade of the trees and remember our children. It is our hope that you will enjoy it and the memory of the children. The mission of The Compassionate Friends is: When a child dies, at any age, the family suffers intense pain and may feel hopeless and isolated. The Compassionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. Today when we visit Lakeview Park, we know we have accomplished the mission of The Compassionate Friends. We cannot thank the city of Port Clinton enough for the continued support for The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County. You allowed us the opportunity to remember our children in such a way that can be shared the community for years to come. Because of you, we have a place to visit, remember and reflect. We also need to thank Port Clinton City employees, Family Campground, Matt Holcomb, Sam Halsted, David Glasser, Rob Hickman, Tim Smith, Vince Leone, Larry Holman, Bergman Orchards, Otto & Urban Florists, Ottawa Seneca and Sandusky Solid Waste District, Marys Blossom Shoppe, our friends and family, but most of all, our parents, who spent countless hours to build our memorial. Our children will forever be honored at The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County Childrens Memorial. Thank you, Roseann Hickman Chapter Leader, The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County

(Above) Danbury tailback Cody German gains some of his total 115 rushing yards against a stingy Northwood defense Friday. (Bottom) Danbury flanker Jim Chamberlin snags this over-the-head 30-yard pass from Seth Vargo. Photos By John Kozak BY YANEEK SMITH Competing against the top team in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, Danbury held its own against Northwood for 2 quarters before the Rangers pulled away for a 48-19 win. Northwood, which improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the TAAC with the victory, has won nine of the last 12 league titles. They took a 6-0 lead with 3:18 remaining in the first quarter on a 16-yard-run by Dominik Bermejo. The Rangers, who have won five consecutive games, pushed the lead to 20-0 at halftime behind a 41-yard run by Jacob Davenport and a 14-yard pass from Mike Vallejo to Scott Slater. Early in the third quarter, Seth Vargo hit James Dorko on an 82-yard pass to cut the deficit to 20-7 before Northwood responded with three touchdowns to make it 41-7. Vargo had a 3-yard touchdown run with 10:31 left in the fourth quarter and Jimmy Chamberlain caught a 41-yard touchdown from Vargo nearly five minutes later. We played well, said Danbury head coach Bryan Dudash. We took their best shot and didnt back down; we did some really good things. We had over 450 yards of total offense and a lot of it was against their (starters). Last year it was 59-0. The defense did okay. We had a bad day with the special teams, many long kickoff returns (for Northwood) and bad punts. The main thing was the offense got first downs and ran the clock. Vargo finished 12-of-25 passing for 219 yards and one touchdown and one interception and ran for a score. Chamberlain caught six passes for 124 yards and a score, Dorko had one reception for 82 yards and a touchdown and running back Cody German carried the ball 25 times for 115 yards. This week, the Lakers, who are now 2-5 and 1-3 in the league, travel to Ottawa Hills (2-5, 2-2 TAAC) to face a Green Bears team that is coming off a 21-14 victory over Cardinal Stritch. Ottawa Hills, a playoff team in each of the last two seasons, defeated the Lakers, 45-22, last year, but is having a down year in 2013.

Newspapers are dead?
Over the last 15 years, since the proliferations of the internet, paid circulation newspapers have seen their subscriptions drop dramatically, up to 8% per year. That is why you hear Newspapers are dead. Thats the bad news. The good news is FREE community papers, like The Beacon, have had ZERO reduction in circulation and readership! Clyde defeats Oak Harbor, 42-0

BY YANEEK SMITH Following a tough loss to Perkins last week, Clyde knew it would have to put that setback behind itself and refocus if it were to rebound this week against Oak Harbor. The Fliers answered the call, scoring three touchdowns in the games first three minutes on its way to a 42-0 defeat of Oak Harbor in Sandusky Bay Conference action Friday. On the games first play from scrimmage, Clyde quarterback Tim Hoppe hit Derek Gray out in the flat before Gray broke several tackles and raced down the sidelines for a 62-yard touchdown. Austin Baker, who converted on all six of his extra-point attempts, converted on the PAT to make it 7-0 and the Fliers (6-1, 3-1 SBC) never looked back. After pinning the Rockets (3-4, 2-2 SBC) back deep and forcing them to go three-and-out, the Fliers, following a short punt, took over at Oak Harbors 24-yard-line. On the next play, Hoppe hit Blake Miller in the end zone to make it 14-0 with 9:14 remaining in the opening quarter. Clyde scored on the ensuing kickoff when the Rockets, trying to execute a trick play, fumbled the ball and Kyle Mange picked it up at the 12-yard-line before running it in for another score. The Fliers closed out the first-quarter scoring when Hoppe hit Colin Reiman on a 23-yard pass over the middle on third-and-8. On the play, which finished off a 7-play, 60-yard drive, Reiman caught a short pass over the middle before eluding a couple of defenders and racing into the end zone. We executed pretty well early on, said Clyde head coach Ryan Carter. Our skill position players made some big plays. We wanted to get off to a good start and we got some opportunities. We had talked about bouncing back and setting a tone (for this game). Carter was especially pleased with his defense, which pitched its second shutout of the season. The defense played really, really well, Carter said. They shut down the run and forced (Oak Harbor) to pass and the DBs played well. Hoppe was magnificent, connecting on 8-of-12 passes for 188 yards and four touchdowns. Miller finished with three catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns, Gray had two receptions for 73 yards and a score and Reiman caught three passes for 38 yards and a touchdown. Damian Coburn helped pace the rushing attack with seven carries for 47 yards and a touchdown. The Fliers finished with 372 total yards of offense and 14 first downs. It was an especially important win for Clyde, which fell to Perkins last week after holding the lead at halftime. Hoppe spoke about the teams mindset during the week. We had to get our focus back this week, he said. We hadnt had a loss yet, but we came out and practiced hard. We found some leaders this week and we made some plays tonight.

Someone told me I look like a cover page for Coastal Living Magazine with all of my Grande Maison quality and cottage comforts. It would be too modest of me to disagree, so Ill brag instead. When you first see me, you may notice the manicure, as my landscaping is amazing. Then youll see head to toe style with my gourmet kitchen, slab granite counters and Amish built hickory cabinets. Next Ill melt your troubles away with my two-story stone fireplace, and Ill entertain family and guests with my spacious front to back open floor plan. Did I mention that the scenery from my sun-room and back deck will take your breath away? Come see me and be amazed. If you fall in love with me, Im motivated to be your new home.
