THE WISE AD FOOLISH VIRGIS.BY REV. J. SARGEAUT, M.A.St. Matthew xxv. 1 — J3.*• Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto tenvirgins, which took their lamps and went forth to meetthe bridegroom. And Jive of them were wise, and Jivewere foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them. But the wise took oil intheir vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroomtarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnightthere was a cry made. Behold the bridegroom cometh :go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto thewise. Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out.But the wise answered saying. ot so, lest there be notenough for us and you : but go ye rather to them that sell,,and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, thebridegroom came, and they that were ready went in withhim to the marriage, and the door was shut. Afterwardcame also the other virgins, saying^ Lord,Lord, open to us.But he answered and said. Verily I say tmtoyou, I knowyou not. Watch therefore, for ye ktiow neither the daynor the hour wherein the Son of m>an cometh.Let us, my brethren, for this day's improve-ment, consider together the parable of ourdivine Master, which I have just read to you ;16 THE WISE ADand may the Holy Spirit, which proceedsfrom him and from the Father,* be presentwith us !
We will go through each verse, in itsorder, to be sure that we thoroughly under-stand its meaning. We will, as we proceed, dwell on thelesson which our Saviour, in his merciftilkindness, wished to fix in the minds of hisdisciples in every age, from the time whenthey came to him "as he sat upon the Mountof Olives,"'! till all the world shall come tostand before his judgment-seat.J For we andall, need I tell you, that we do indeed requirehis holy teaching." Then shall the kingdom of heaven he likenedunto ten virgins, which took their lamps and wentforth to meet the bridegroom.*'The expression ** kingdom of heaven ** is usedin two senses in Scripture. Sometimes thekingdom of heaven means the state of salva--tion upon earth, the reception of the Gospelby the whole body of the church of Christ, who profess that they are in covenant withhim, and are bound to obey those laws, of which he was the author and giver ; and whoacknowledge him to be their heavenly King. The kingdom of heaven, in some other partsof the Bible, must be understood to point at* John XV. 26. -f" Matt. xxiv. 3. J Rom. xiv. 10.FOOLISH VJHCIIS.17
'the dm/ of judgment, when the happiness of the blessed after death, in the presence of God, the eternal three in one, and of theHoly Ang^els, shall be declared, and when thewicked shall be condemned to endless woe.' in the verse before us the words may be takenin either sense. If we confine our notice tothe two sets of virgins, "the kingdom of hea-ven " will be, the body of Christians, wise orfoolish, real or pretended, who are living": upon earth. On the other hand, if we turnI our thoughts to the unexpected coming of thebrid^room, and to what then befell theI maidens, on account of their different be-[ haviour, we, in that case, see in the kingdomI of heaven, the last great day of account, whenI Christ as judge shall pronounce the sentence[ of joy or sorrow, upon every man, " according9 his work shall be."*However, as the future lot of those, who areI called Christians is to be determined by theV manner in which they conduct themselves inI their state of trial here upon earth, it is muchI'the same to whichever of these two meaningsrwe refer "the kingdom of heaven" in theIpassage before us,"To engage the attention of his hearers, toIdraw their minds to heavenly, through the•means of earthly things, our Lord alludes to a• Rev. xxii. J"J.18 THE WISE ADwedding, ^nd forrns a tale at once familiar and
