System requirements for Encarta 2005 products ======================================================================== General requirements are: * Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional SP3, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 operating system * Minimum of 64 MB of RAM for Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (128 MB recommended) * Minimum of 128 MB of RAM for Windows 2000 Professional SP3, Windows XP, or Win dows Server 2003 * Super VGA, 16-bit or higher monitor supporting 800 x 600 screen resolution * 4 MB or more of video memory * Microsoft Mouse, IntelliMouse, or compatible pointing device * 16-bit sound card with speakers or headphones * Internet Explorer 6.0 software (included on disc) or later. Other default brow sers can be used after installation. Installation of Internet Explorer 6.0 requi res up to an additional 75 MB of hard-disk space. * To use Web Links, Update Encarta, Encarta Premium Online, and other online fea tures, you need a 28.8-Kbps or faster modem, access to the Internet, up to 4 MB

of additional hard-disk space for each monthly update, Club Encarta Registration , and a Microsoft Passport account (required to join Club Encarta). Access to an d use of the Internet may require payment of a separate fee to an Internet servi ce provider (ISP). Local and long-distance telephone charges may apply. Additional requirements for Encarta Reference Library Premium 2005 DVD are: * Multimedia PC with a Pentium 333-MHz or higher processor (at least 500-MHz rec ommended) * Up to 430 MB of available hard-disk space * To hear the Dictionary Pronunciations, you need up to 140 MB of additional, av ailable hard-disk space * To use Encarta Kids, you need up to 330 MB of additional, available hard-disk space * To use the copy-to-hard-drive feature, you need up to 2.0 GB of additional, av ailable hard-disk space * DVD drive Additional requirements for Encarta Reference Library Premium 2005 (5 CDs) are: * Multimedia PC with a Pentium 333-MHz or higher processor (at least 500-MHz rec ommended) * Up to 430 MB of available hard-disk space * To hear the Dictionary pronunciations, you need up to 140 MB of additional, av ailable hard-disk space * To use Encarta Kids, you need up to 330 MB of additional, available hard-disk space * To use the copy-to-hard-drive feature, you need up to 2.0 GB of additional, av ailable hard-disk space * DVD drive or Quad-speed (or faster) CD drive Additional requirements for Encarta Encyclopedia Deluxe 2005 are: * Multimedia PC with a Pentium 300-MHz or higher processor * Up to 340 MB of available hard-disk space * To use the copy-to-hard-drive feature, you need up to 960 MB of additional, av ailable hard-disk space * DVD drive or Quad-speed (or faster) CD drive Additional requirements for Encarta Encyclopedia Standard 2005 are: * Multimedia PC with a Pentium 300-MHz or higher processor * Up to 200 MB of available hard-disk space * To use the copy-to-hard-drive feature, you need up to 500 MB of additional, av ailable hard-disk space * DVD drive or Quad-speed (or faster) CD drive ======================================================================== ======================================================================== 2. Installing Encarta products on network ======================================================================== Encarta products can be installed on multiple computers in a network, such as fo r a school or library. Refer to the Network Installation Guide (AG.rtf) for inst ructions about how to install Encarta products on a network. Review the Network Installation Guide before using the Admin Setup wizard.

To locate the Network Installation Guide: 1. Insert the Encarta Installation disc (CD disc 1 or the DVD) to the CD drive o r DVD drive. 2. In Windows Explorer, open the CD or DVD, and then open the Support folder. 3. Double-click AG.rtf. Note: Network installation is not available for Encarta Encyclopedia Standard. N etwork installation also is not available if Encarta came installed on your comp uter from the manufacturer, or you received your Encarta CDs or DVD from the com puter manufacturer. ======================================================================== Windows Media Player fails to install during a network installation of Japanese version on Windows 2000 When performing a network installation of the Japanese version of the Encarta Re ference Library Premium on a Windows 2000 operating system, you may receive an e rror message and Windows Media Player may not install. After completing the Enc arta installation, install Windows Media Player by double-clicking WMPMINI.EXE i n the \REDIST\MS\WMPMINI folder on the Encarta server. ======================================================================== ======================================================================== 3. Encarta Reference Library and Encarta Encyclopedia issues ======================================================================== Restart message when installing in Windows 2000 When you install an Encarta product in Windows 2000, you may be prompted to rest art the computer during setup. After the computer has restarted, you must log in with Administrator privileges to complete the installation. For more informatio n about Administrator privileges, see online Help in Windows 2000. ======================================================================== Error message when installing in Windows 2000 When you install on a non-English version of Windows 2000 or an English version of Windows 2000 with non-U.S. regional settings, an OLE32.dll error message may appear during installation. Click OK. The installation should continue normally. ======================================================================== Message 1618 when installing on Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, or Windows XP If message 1618 appears during installation, click OK. The installation should c ontinue normally. ======================================================================== Page Not Found error or blank pages appear when navigating Encarta content This may be caused by a problem with Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.0. Pl ease download and install the latest version of MSXML 4.0. Go to http://www.micr osoft.com/downloads, and then search for "MSXML 4.0". ======================================================================== Encarta opens slowly when computer has antivirus software enabled If your computer has antivirus software enabled, Encarta may open very slowly. T o have Encarta open more quickly, add the EIT file extension to the safe file li

st for the antivirus software, or do not scan files with the EIT file extension. ======================================================================== Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player appear in a different language after installing Encarta Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player may be upgraded when you install Enca rta. If you install a language version of Encarta that does not match the langua ge version of your Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player, they will now app ear in the language version of Encarta. ======================================================================== Unable to play multimedia in Windows Media Player 9.0 Multimedia, such as audio files, may not play if Windows Media Player is not com pletely installed. To finish the installation of Windows Media Player, open Wind ows Media Player (or double-click wmplayer.exe) and you will be prompted to comp lete the installation. Note: Encarta 2005 products install Windows Media Player 7.1. ======================================================================== Wheel may not work with IntelliMouse Encarta works with a wheel mouse, but it does not make use of all of the wheel f eatures. ======================================================================== Read Aloud does not work If you cannot use the Read Aloud feature in Encarta, the Text-to-Speech Engine m ay have been removed from the computer. To reinstall the Text-to-Speech Engine: 1. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs. 3. In the list of programs, double-click the name of your Encarta product. (If y ou're using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, click Change.) 4. Click Next in the Setup Wizard. 5. Select Repair, and then click Next. 5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Note: Read Aloud is not available in Encarta Encyclopedia Standard. ======================================================================== Read Aloud text is not read aloud or is read in the wrong language The following issues occur when you are logged on as a user rather than an admin istrator, and you are using a non-English version of Encarta: * If you're using an English version of Windows XP or Windows 2000, the text is read aloud in English when you select the Read Aloud feature. * If you're using a non-English version of Windows XP or Windows 2000, the text is not read aloud When you select the Read Aloud feature. Instead, a Help window appears. ======================================================================== Encarta products do not support Preview or Beta versions of software

Encarta products do not support Preview or Beta versions of software, such as Wi ndows Media Player, Internet Explorer, or Windows operating system. Encarta prod ucts support only released versions of software. ======================================================================== Cannot hear sounds If you start Encarta without a sound card installed, audio files do not play. ======================================================================== ======================================================================== 4. Encarta Researcher issues ======================================================================== Availability Encarta Researcher is available only in the Encarta Reference Library Premium pr oducts. ======================================================================== System requirements The minimum requirements for using Encarta Researcher are: * 5 MB of available hard-disk space, in addition to the space required to run th e Encarta product. * Internet Explorer 6.0 (included). In addition to the hard-disk space required to run the Encarta product, Internet Explorer 6.0 requires up to an additional 7 5 MB of hard-disk space. Other default browsers can be used after installation. ======================================================================== Can't install versions in different languages Only one language version of Encarta Researcher can be installed on a computer. For example, if you have installed both the French and English language versions of an Encarta product, Encarta Researcher uses the language of the version you installed first. ======================================================================== Unable to add Japanese characters on non-Japanese operating systems Adding Japanese text to Encarta Researcher on a non-Japanese operating system is not supported. If you need to include Japanese characters in a report, build th e report in Encarta Researcher, and then copy the characters from Internet Explo rer directly to the final report document. ======================================================================== Internet Explorer opens with Encarta Researcher pane If you open Encarta Researcher, and then open Internet Explorer, the Encarta Res earcher pane remains open. To close the pane, click the X in the upper-right cor ner of the Researcher pane. ========================================================================
