Say, ‘Flight shallnot avail you: if you manage toescape from death or killing, youwill enjoy life only for a shortwhile.’

Say, ‘Who is there toshield you from God if He wishesto harm you? If God wishes toshow you mercy, who can preventHim.’ Besides God they shallfind none to protect them, andnone to bring them succour.

God knows exactly whoamong you hold the others back,who say to their brethren, ‘Comeover to our side,’ and they seldomtake part in the fighting.

Begrudging you all help, butwhen danger comes, you can seethem looking at you with rollingeyes as if in their death throes; but once their fear has passed,they come to you and do glib-talking in their greed for wealth.Such men have no faith, so Godhas foiled their actions. This isindeed easy for God.

Theythought the confederate tribeswould never withdraw. Indeed,if the confederates should comeagain, they would prefer to be inthe desert, among the Bedouins.There they would ask news of you [from a distance]. But if they were with you, they wouldtake very little part in the fighting.

You have indeed in theProphet of God a good examplefor those of you who look to Godand the Last Day, and remember God always.

When the believers saw the confederates,they said, ‘This is what God andHis Messenger have promisedus. Surely the promise of Godand His Messenger has cometrue.’ It served to increase themin faith and submission.
