Say hello to the future and goodbye to the pastas Landmark Cinemas and Empire Theatresbuild five state-of-the-art movie theatres attheir south-end cineplex while shutting thedoors at downtown Brandon's Strand Theatre. The Capitol Theatre, first built six years agonext to Shoppers Mall, will undergo a $4.8-million facelift in the next six months asLandmark and Empire build five stadium-styletheatres to the south of the existing theatre byChristmas.Early next year, the existing cinema will beclosed for construction as the Capitol guts itsexisting four theatres and concession area, replacing the whole thing with bigger theatresfeaturing larger seats, a game area and fastfood franchises in the concession area."I'm very excited and I know the staff are veryexcited about the situation. Brandon peoplehave supported this theatre immensely. They'rethe silent partner in this," said Bob Pilchar, themanager of the Capitol.Ultimately, Pilchar says it was demand for thenew-style theatres and their trappings that hasled the Capitol and the Strand's parentcompanies to expand at the mall and shutdown the 10th Street Strand Theatre. The Strand, which at 552 seats is one of thebiggest free-standing theatres left on thePrairies, will be sold in early 2005.Its employees - who already work at bothcinemas - will be transferred to the newtheatre, which, once built, is expected to create40 new jobs."When you're putting up a big multiplexbuilding like this, it gives any customer whatthey need ... it's sad, but times have changedand we must move on."The Strand's closure, however, is expected todrive another nail into the coffin of a street thathas already lost so much in the past five years. When the doors shut on the theatre, which hasbeen open for more than a half-century, it willleave all but two spaces on the east side of the100 block of 10th Street empty.
