Installing Zimbra Messaging Server on Linux HowTo
Zimbra messaging server is the leading replacement for Exchange server and its open source softwarefor email and collaboration - email, group calendar, and contacts, instant messaging, file storage andweb document management. The Zimbra email and calendar server is available for Linux, Mac OS Xand virtualization platforms. Zimbra syncs to smartphones (iPhone, BlackBerry) and desktop clientslike Outlook and Thunderbird. Zimbra also features archiving and discovery for compliance. Zimbra canbe deployed on-premise or as a hosted email solution.
Here are the steps required to successfully install Zimbra 5.0.13 on RHE5. The system will workperfectly even after its rebooted (no MTA errors). I have used these steps to install zimbra onseveral servers and all work perfectly. I hope this guide will save others the time of huntingaround forums. Also it’s a good idea to have the DNS A records and MX records setup before youstart the installation.1. Install RHE5 from DVD or CDROM and use the entire disk2. Configure your:Fully Qualified Hostname,IP address and Gateway,DNSdetails and
MX Mail server
3. Setup your root password4. Setup the software. Select Server only and CustomizeNow select only the following components:
EditorsText base InternetDevelopment LibrariesDevelopment ToolsAdministration ToolsBaseSystem Tools
5. The system will now install and will required DVD.6. Once the system reboots disable firewall and SElinux.7. Make sure your
/etc/hosts
file has the line, IP address FQDN hostname i.e.:
192.168.83.20 mail.flinstate.com mail\\ Change this to your settings
8. Reboot the system (for changes to take effect).9. Then run yum update to my sure your system is fully up to date.10. Reboot the system.11. Next remove sendmail by running yum remove sendmail.12. Next install some required files by running the following command:
yum install openssl097a -yyum install compat-libstdc++-296 compat-libstdc++-33.-yyum install compat-db -y \\(to Get Spell Server to Start)
13. Edit the
/etc/sudoers
and comment out
“defaults requiretty”
(put # in front of it).14. Edit the
/etc/sysconfig/i18n
and delete the line
LANG=”en_US.UTF-8”
.15. Reboot the system.16. Next install fetchmail:
yum install fetchmail -y
17. Run the command setup then go to the system services and un-check the following services.

18. Reboot the system.19. Login and change directory to
/var/tmp
zcs-5.0.13_GA_2791.RHEL5.20090206115340.tgz
21. Uncompress the download
tar -xzvf zcs-5.0.13_GA_2791.RHEL5.20090206115340.tgz
22. Change directory to:
cd zcs-5.0.13_GA_2791.RHEL5.20090206115340.
23. Start the installation by running
./install.sh
and follow the on screen instructions.24. If all is good – fire your Browser and type, in our case:
http://mail.flinstate.com mail
Log in with your respective credentials and which should bring up Zimbra admin page:
To log to Mail server enter:https://mail.flinstateun.com
