Hamlet Notes:
•
One theme is vengeance and three people have a cause for vengeance Hamlet, Fortinbras,and Leartes
•
Hamlet’s uncle poisoned his dad to get the throne and marry Hamlet’s mom
o
Hamlet: his uncle poisoned his dad to get the throne and marry his mom
o
Fortinbras: his dad was killed by old Hamlet and his land was taken
o
Leartes: Hamlet kills his dad on accident and drives his sister crazy
•
All three men lie to get their vengeance
•
 To kill or not to kill (Ms. West said it I don’t know)
•
Marcellus and another guard go to get Horatio because he is a scholar and can tell them if the apparition they see is real
•
 The whole kingdom was prepping to go to war with Fortinbras
•
“What happens to the king happens to the land”
•
In Claudius’s beginning speech he was mocking Fortinbras
•
Claudius sent a letter to Fortinbras uncle because his uncle is the elder in the family
•
Gertrude believes that Hamlet should stop grieving
•
But to stop grieving is what Hamlet calls common therefore he does not want to stop
•
Hamlet is mad at his mom because after his died had only died for a few months (I think)she goes and marries his uncle
•
He says that the food for old Hamlets funeral became the food of Gertrude and Claudius’swedding (jokingly)
•
Hamlet claims that he is black inside and out and is mad at his mom
•
In the reading look for the line with the word “antic”
•
After finally experiencing the ghost and having the ghost tell him that his father waspoisoned to death by his uncle Hamlet decides to act crazy to see how people react to himto see who is lying and who is not
•
He does not trust the ghost in the beginning
 
•
Hamlet made Marcellus and the other guard and Horatio swear to not say anything
•
By acting crazy he is testing peoples loyalty to him
•
Polonius finding out that Hamlet and Ophelia had relations told her to stay away from him
•
Staying away from him was the reason that the whole royal family thought he went crazy
•
Believing that Ophelia was the cause of Hamlet’s insanity Claudius and Polonius used heras bait
•
When Hamlet went to talk to Ophelia he found out that he had been watched and showedhis “insanity” by throwing Ophelia around and smashing her face into the doors
•
Seeing his insanity Claudius decides to send Hamlet to England to keep him away fromOphelia if things don’t change (?)
•
In the end Hamlet rejects Ophelia
•
Polonius hires a Frenchmen by the name of Renaldo to spy on Leartes and to spreadrumors about him to make sure he is not a bad person
•
The queen and king hire Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to keep Hamlet happy anddistracted with toys and other things to try to find out why he is crazy
•
 The queen and king said that once they get what they need Rosencrantz and Guildensternwill be paid
•
 The king and queen can’t differentiate between Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
•
Fortinbras claims that he has to fight through Denmark to get to Poland which is theiracquired destination
•
Polonius has a hard time coming to point
•
Hamlet likes to mess with Polonius a lot
•
Hamlet begins to beat himself up for not killing Claudius
•
R and G bring the players in to amuse Hamlet
•
they foreshadow what happens to Denmark by reciting a speech from troy
•
Hamlet made the players reenact the death of his father
•
during the play Hamlet clearly makes fun of his mother
•
while the play is going on Horatio is watching Claudius’s reaction as proof 
 
•
Hamlet is mad @ R and G because they side with Claudius
•
during the play Polonius tries to listen in on Hamlet twice
•
Hamlet only trust Horatio
•
Claudius sends Hamlet to try to get him killed
•
Hamlet escapes England because he was rescued by pirates
•
Claudius was praying the 1
st
time Hamlet tried to kill him but he decided that wasn’t’ farebecause his spirit would go to heaven so he decided to wait to make his move
•
But what Hamlet doesn’t realize is that Claudius is not sorry for his actions so he wouldn’tgo to heaven anyways
•
Getting so angry Hamlet goes and yells @ his mom
•
Hearing rustling in the curtains he goes and stabs @ the curtains killing off Poloniusbecause he was trying to listen in on hi conversation
•
While in Gertrude’s room he sees the king again
•
 The old king came to tell him that he is to not yell at his mother because he was warnedbefore
•
Ecstasy means madness
•
Gertrude accuses Hamlet of ecstasy
•
In the play only the men can see that ghost because women were considered weak so tosee the ghost might make them insane
•
Gertrude promise Hamlet that she wouldn’t tell Claudius that he wasn’t crazy
•
Hamlet leaves Polonius on the floor to bleed everywhere
•
“Had we been here” were the words that Claudius had said when he realized that heneeded to kill Hamlet
•
R and G run around the home looking for Polonius
•
Hamlet sends a letter to England pretending to be Claudius to kill R and G
•
Claudius realizes that Hamlet is loved by the people so his death would have to be anaccident
•
Ophelia has become insane and speaks in songs and flowers
of 00
