The Best Games of the Summer

Most years, summer is a time of rest for gamers. This is when the big sports games come out and most big-time non-sports developers are pushing ads for their games that will release in fall and winter. However, this year was a bit different. With independent gaming on the rise and Call of Duty firmly locking up the fall and winter shopping windows, developers are more often than not pushing their games out in spring and summer. As a result, big developers such as Naughty Dog and little developers such as Cellar Door Games pushed out their titles and gave gamers something to stay inside for during the hot, humid days of summer. Here are some of the best games that were released in the last few months. If you havent played these yet, youre doing it wrong. The Last of Us (PS3): This technically came out before the official first day of summer but Im counting it anyway. Naughty Dogs action/adventure, survival/horror game was brilliant. The story was incredibly human and the fungus-ridden world was fully realized with incredible design. I wish the game was longer than the 14 hours most players will take to finish it, but its a masterpiece of a game that perfectly caps the end of the PS3s exclusive era. Rogue Legacy (PC, PS Vita soon): What a fun game. Taking cues from Castlevania and Metroid and tough-as-nails, rogue-like games, this side-scrolling action game has charm and challenge for everyone. You will die a lot in this game, but your heros offspring will continue the fight and allow players to learn new abilities, earn new classes and work toward defeating all of the bosses hidden in the randomly generated dungeon. Sure, some of the heros children might be nearsighted or have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but that shouldnt stop you from trying to save the day. Sid Meiers Civilization V -- Brave New World (PC): This is an expansion and not really a brand new game, but it completely modifies Civilization V. The new trade routes and culture mechanics bounce this game from the great category to a strategy game that is one of the best of all time. Building cities and managing economies have never been more fun while filling up your art galleries and studios with great works of art, like work from Michelangelo. Each turn is filled with tough decisions as you decide where your people will work, what they will build, and which diplomatic ties to embrace and which to sever. Ive poured hours into this game and telling myself, just one more turn, before I realize it is 4 AM. Mario and Luigi: Dream Team (Nintendo 3DS): The Mario and Luigi roleplaying games are always a blast. They feature hilarious writing and clever game mechanics that require players to tilt their 3DS to pick up a bunch of Luigis before you kick them at the baddies. Pulling from traditional-turn-based RPGs, Mario and Luigi has levels, abilities and gear. But it also has that Nintendo polish and Mario flavor. The Pillo folk have been turned to stone and it is up to the brothers to go into Luigis dreams and save the Pillos. Every moment of this game introduces the players to fun, new mechanics and always keeps you on your toes.

The Release of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Subscription-based massive-multiplayeronline games continue to march toward release dates even though the common opinion seems to side with free-to-play options. Still, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn was released August 27 and requires $13 a month to play it on top of the $30 or $40 price tag for PC and PS3 respectively. It is too early to say how good or bad this game is, but at the moment it is a ton of fun. It is your standard MMO. You grab quests, you kill monsters and you party up with other players to bring down the big guys. But something is different about FFXIV. One thing is that it is based on Final Fantasy, so there are incredibly well-designed monsters and the graphics are stunning. Ability effects are top notch and the community is incredibly nice. But it will be a while before anyone knows if this game is worth the $13 a month. MMOs are judged by their longevity, not their first few launch months. So no energy tanks just yet, but I do recommend the game if you have $30 bucks to burn and want to give it a shot.

ACM at UCO: Animal Farm

Farming the Next Generation of Music Talent in the Heartland
As a long-time adjunct of the Oklahoma music and arts scene, I can tell you this: It isnt easy making music in the heartland. The music itself comes easily enough. Its the what to do with the music thats tough not that its ever even been easy making it in music hubs like New York and Los Angeles. Making it in music is an exacting game no matter where youre pursuing the dream. Since the rise of the digital music age and the fall of the record industry, it has become even more difficult. While technology increasingly makes it exponentially easier to create, capture and disseminate ones music, the subsequent proliferation of good has flooded the market and made it nearly impossible to compete as an independent artist. In short, you have to be an animal to make music in Oklahoma these days. Luckily for the animals, theres a new farm in town. ACM at UCO (The Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma), located in Oklahoma Citys Bricktown, is bringing more to the state than just an education in modern music. Established by Scott Booker (music industry entrepreneur and longtime manager of The Flaming Lips), ACM at UCO is a partnership with The Academy of Contemporary music in Guilford, UK. A lesser journalist might call this the School of Rock. A slightly greater, but still lesser, journalist might try The School of Hard Rocks. I am neither of those journalists, although I do hang out with them from time to time. The fully credited college music program provides educational programs across the board in all areas of music performance, business, and production. As with any education, students get out of it what they put into it. There are no degrees or guarantees of rock stardom. What it does provide, however, is real-world knowledge from those experienced in the music industry. More importantly than that, ACM at UCO has also created a culture and framework through which to engage the music industry at large. One particularly disenchanting hurdle for musicians of the Oklahoma scene (as Ive witnessed in my 13 years as a part of it in one capacity or another) is the isolation. With no established structure to serve as a launching pad for talent from Oklahoma, there has been a primarily one-way conversation with the music world at large, where messages could come in to the scene, but none were making it out. (The exception to this rule was the period during the 90s when bands like The Flaming Lips and Chainsaw Kittens were making it to fame.) The lack of an established culture for launching music has been both a blessing and a curse. The blessing has been that bands are able to create their own culture and way of doing things, but the curse is that with a lack of structure comes a lack of exposure. ACM at UCO is helping to establish that culture by farming talent and creating a system of exposure, ultimately bringing what is happening with music in Oklahoma to a larger world stage. Although the ACM at UCO culture represents only one aspect of the larger Oklahoma music scene, the crossover of knowledge, exposure and experience is already having an effect on numerous scenes within the scene, and I suspect will continue to have with time a larger effect to come. Why buy the farm when you can get the talent for free?

Pride, Loud and Clear:

The Journey to Regaining Our Traditional OU Fanfare
In college I was a diehard band nerd. But after switching gears to my internship and impending graduation, I tucked my saxophone in its case, whispered adios, and tried to recover. And then I heard about the pregame changes. Before you understand my outrage, imagine this: You hear the palpable energy of 85,000 fans as you wait in the tunnels with bated breath. The tuba section belts their traditional chant. You clutch your instrument, ready to dash when you hear the symbolic snare drum beat. The crowd ROARS. Mad applause reverberates. Then the energetic beat of the snares as the crowd claps along. Then the iconic drum major strut. Finally, the announcers intro: The Priiiiiide of Oklahomaaaa! After attempting to focus on bolting out at the right count, suddenly youre swept in a sea of bodies, making the maddest dash of your life out the tunnels, onto the field, welcomed by thousands upon thousands of fans. The scene before you adrenaline high, smacks you like the sound of Rufnek popguns going off. Youre sprinting into a football stadium, watched by the most gargantuan audience youll see in your life. They scream once you commence the fanfare. It begins. Your pride at that moment cant swell any greater as you partake in the third best pregame in the nation*. Except this pregame was (and is) in jeopardy. Gone were the days where the crowd clapped and sang along with the traditional pregame of generations past. Psh, Pride members and alumni, along with OU fans old and new, werent going to let that happen. This is a pregame people have arrived early to see and love to participate in, after all. Why take that involvement and tradition away? After Brian Britt stepped down from his directorship last year, Dr. Justin Stolarik was selected to lead the Pride. With new leadership came a new marching style think OSU and Wisconsin. The beloved pregame ritual and fanfare would change too. My opinion? If it aint broke, dont fix it. Former Pride trumpet player Hayden Edgmon posted the videos of the new fanfare and pregame. Seeing the controversy, I began to realize there was a lack of transparency in what was happening. This became clearer as rumors swirled about what was going to be changed. I saw what was happening in person and decided that all alumni should know what is going on I wanted to create discussion that was based on the truth. After hundreds of views, Pride alumni and members of the community expressed their shock and outrage. Finally, on Tuesday, August 20, word from Dr. Stolarik: We reached the conclusion that we would keep our traditional fanfare. Pride alumni Jessica Lada said this was a wise decision because, we dont just hear it at the beginning and end of every game. They also play it on 92.5 KOMA at 5 PM every weekday. Changing the fanfare was like taking a sledgehammer to the walls when all they needed was a coat of paint. We have made our voices heard and won a battle with the fanfares return. But now the question is: How about allowing an estimated 50 students a spot to march instead of sitting on the sidelines? (Allegedly they will be worked back into the drill.) How about our old pregame setup? The energy of the new pre-game, as we saw in the Louisiana Monroe game and this past weekend, just doesnt compare to the old one. I couldnt imagine if we didnt have the fanfare back on top of that. Still, there was a valuable lesson to be learned in this: If you dont like something, make your voice heard. There is power in passion and numbers. I loved seeing this grassroots movement stand on behalf of tradition. I, for one, have emailed David Boren.** I encourage you to do the same. However, we must keep Pride members in mind. Regardless of what changed and what has stayed the same, they have worked hard on the new drill, and in general theyre among the hardest-working students at OU. As the season goes on, support the Pride as they root the Sooners to a win. * See OUs Ranking by -----> Scanning the QR code. ------> ** Borens Contact Info: (405) 325-1212 actionline@ou.edu dboren@ou.edu

Making Out With Fear.

Fear came over to my house last night for dinner. I hadnt seen him for a while, but if I really think about it, Im positive hes been lingering in my general vicinity for over 20 years. Hes my frenemy. He has been since birth and will be until death, but Im not alone on this one. Fear is a popular guy. He knows everybody: every political leader, every schoolteacher and every beach bum. He gets around. Hes not a good friend though, which makes his magnetism such a mystery. Hes the kind of guy that, if you hang out with him too long, youll wake up on the wrong path at the worst time as the ugliest version of yourself. Thats how he rolls. When it comes to love, fear is a major player. Singles who want to meet someone have to put themselves out there. They have to come onto people, make that first move, and then go out on a first date. That can be scary. Not all dates are pretty. Not all humans are kind and inspiring. The possibility of rejection is very real, and rejection is a hideous feeling. The reality is that at some point in your life, rejection is going to course through your veins like a nasty virus. Its going to happen. I dont care who you are. Hell, Jennifer Anniston has been dumped. Making yourself vulnerable to rejection is one of the rungs on the ladder of love. You simply have to go through it to reach the emotional destination you crave. Fear must not block the way between you and finding an amazing partner. However, this is especially difficult when youve been burned. I know men and women who thought their partner was for life, only to find a sexy text from an outside party whod been with their one and only. When that happens, your stomach drops out. You swear off love and get on the hate train with a first class ticket to Distrust City. How do you start over? Its difficult to listen to someone telling you to believe him or her when the last person who told you that took a giant dump on your trust. Is it smart to reexpose your thin-skinned heart with full confidence to the next person? I believe you simply must. Keep your glass half-full as best you can or life will eat you alive. When you feel ready, just do it. Dive in with your fingers crossed. Its like anything else. You do the painful hours at the gym to rock a hot body. You study long hours to get the grade you need. In the dating world, you have to kiss a few frogs to get to your prince/princess. So pretty please, with sugar on top and frosting accents, dont get discouraged! There is someone for you, no doubt, 100% guaranteed, of course! Thats the way the world is designed. To get to that person, though, you must put in the effort, be patient, remain positive and not let the past dictate your future. Get out there. Do date. Do take the actions that will lead you to real love. Do this for yourself, but whatever you do, dont date fear.
