Our dynamic sta and partners throughout ournine countries o operation in Arica are doingantastic work supporting rural amilies andcommunities work their way out o poverty. We are seeing success in all our areas o opera-tion and one o our major challenges or theyears ahead is to build on that success. Wehave a proven track record o success overnearly a quarter o a century but the challeng-es still remain at every level o our operations. As an organisation our shared vision is to seean Arica ree rom poverty and hunger. We re-main frmly committed to the philosophies andethos which were instrumental in the oundingo both Harvest Help and Sel Help Develop-ment International. Our ambition is to dramatically build upon thisproven success by scaling up our own workand as importantly by sharing our knowledgewith other organisations. I we are to see realand lasting development in Arica we needto work in more eective collaboration withlike minded organisations and inuence policychange at all levels.

The global spike in world ood prices during2008 put into sharp ocus the critical impor-tance o ood production or the world’s poor.As a consequence o this crisis, and the ood ri-ots that erupted in many parts o the develop-ing world, our major international institutionswere prompted to acknowledge the crucialrole that rural agriculture had to play in eorts
An Historic Merger
to reduce global poverty. The Secretary General o the UN Ban Ki-Moonsingled out the role to be played by small-hold-ing armers, when he addressed an emergencysummit that was convened by the United Na-tions in Rome to address the crisis, last July. The UK’s ‘Arica Progress Panel’ joined thechorus, when it called or substantial new in-vestment to raise agricultural productivity andincrease ood production in Arica and aroundthe world, while Ireland’s Hunger Task Forceidentifed improving smallholder productivityin Arica as the number one priority, when itpublished its report at the conclusion o morethan a year o deliberation, in September.

to help them to achieve better incomes, betterliving conditions, and better opportunities ortheir amilies, in the years to come. These opportunities are being created orthousands o rural Arican amilies each day,as a result o the ongoing work o Sel HelpArica and its partners. Simple, but eectivemeasures are enabling households to doubleand treble incomes, by ensuring better qualityseed stock is available, by promoting newcrop varieties, by supporting alternate incomegenerating activities, access to credit, and byhelping small-scale armers to organize intolocal co-operatives, to market and sell theirproduce.Improving access to health services, to cleanwater, to better sanitation, and to educationis also making an important contribution -strengthening local services so that uture gen-erations in Arica can enjoy better standards ohealth, a reduction in lie threatening disease, and the passport to a better uture that can beprovided by education.
