No Balochistan dossier fromPakistan: PM tells Parliament
New Delhi, July 29
: TheBJP Wednesday launcheda frontal assault on thegovernment forcompromising on India'sstated position on Pakistanin the Sharm-el-Sheikh joint statement and said the'waters of the seven seaswill not be able to wash theshame' brought on thecountry through this flawedinitiative."The distinctionbetween the aggressor andthe victim has beencompletely obliterated,"Bharatiya Janata Partyleader Yashwant Sinha, also a former foreignminister, said while alludingto a line in the jointstatement that says bothcountries recogniseterrorism as the "chiefthreat".Sinha wasspeaking during a debateon the July 16 India-Pakistan joint statement inparliament that was issuedafter talks between PrimeMinister Manmohan Singhand his Pakistanicounterpart Yousuf RazaGilani at Sharm-el-Sheikh in Egypt. Thecontroversial statement, which delinks action onterror from the compositedialogue process, hasbeen decried by theopposition as acapitulation to Pakistanover the issue ofterrorism.Sinha alsoexposed what he called"a complete turnaround"in the government'sposition on terrorismemanating from Pakistanin less than a month fromManmohan Singh'smeeting with PakistanPresident Asif Ali Zardariin Yekaterinburg on June16 and his meeting withGilani on July 16.AtYekaterinburg,Manmohan Singh hadtold Zardari withinearshot of the media thathe had "a limitedmandate" to tell him thatthe Pakistani territoryshould not be allowed tobe used for terror attacksagainst India. A monthlater, the discussionsmoved beyond terrorismto cover other issues aswell, Sinha contended."InYekaterinburg, the primeminister was confidentand assertive and wewere proud of him. Butthere was a completeturnaround in the statedposition in less than amonth," Sinha said, describing the November2008 Mumbai carnageas "an attack of Pakistanon India".Sinha alsoattacked the governmentfor including a referenceto Balochistan in the jointstatement that hasemboldened Pakistanileaders to accuse Indiaof involvement infomenting insurgency inthe region."Why wasBalochistan included in abilateral document? Nosooner was the ink dry onthe joint statement,Pakistani leaders wereaccusing India ofsupporting insurgency inBalochistan?" he said."All the watersof seven seas will notwash the shame atSharm-el-Sheikh," Sinhasaid amid applause fromopposition benches. This elicited a quickintervention fromManmohan Singh. Theprime minister toldparliament that Pakistandid not give any dossierto India on Balochistanwhen he met Gilani inEgypt, as was reportedby a section of the mediain Pakistan."No suchdossier was given,"Manmohan Singh said.
