As a Marketing MBA, will tell you that it is all deception and manipulation of data to arouse emotion and feeling regarding a product and NOT its real value, or contribution to your life or society. The downfalls of the product are NOT emphasized (as for the reason why commercials quietly, and quickly, relate the negative aspects of their commercial (product/service)--more mandated by law rather than by choice. Consumerism RULES this world, especially the united droned states of amerika; hence, the absolute devastation of this country by debt (of course, a tyrannical and 'illegal' gov does nothing to stop it, and everything to promote it for the benefit of the few). Bernays started consumerism's fast track in the u.s. and it is all about manipulation; of ideals, ideas, general data, and the like. "keeping up with the jones'" is insane but in a world of illusions and manipulation whereby the population would rather be 'part of' something, rather than express individuality, it is all too easy to predict behavior. You can also add the FACT that the mind/brain CAN/IS manipulated daily.
