ALFRED, THE CLASSROOM BUNNY byDevon PitlorI. A pretty woman in shock On the morning of Friday, May 10
2002, ababbling West African taxi driver did his bestto escort an hysterical young woman pastpolice security and into the emergency sectionof Corrington County Public Hospital inValleyview. The woman, screaming wildlyand frozen in a paroxysm of terror, had nohands. She flailed her arms before her, curling up the stubs of her blunt wrists, scanning them again and again in disbelief.Attendant physician, Vijay Singh, noted onhis initial examination report that the womanwas in complete traumatic shock over whatSingh characterized as the “recent” loss of her hands. She seemed, he noted, to suffer nopain from the stumps left above her wrist joints, which gave Dr. Singh reason for pauseas he noted with some disbelief that theexcision, though undoubtedly recent, wasperfectly cauterized and that not a drop of
blood was visible on the stumps or anywhereelse on the woman’s body. Her hands hadbeen surgically removed with such precisionthat it was doubtful that any morbid scarringwould result at the end of her arms. Dr.Singh, who had removed an entire array of limbs during his nine year career inemergency medicine, had never seen anexcision so cleanly executed. Sedated, thewoman lapsed into a comatose state and wassummarily assigned to a ward bed along withthe night’s entry of knife, broken bottle andshotgun wound victims. The on-duty policeofficer recorded that the cab fare had notbeen rendered to the Ivorian driver and thatthe man, almost in as great of grip of shock ashis unfortunate passenger, asked only to beallowed to leave. He had simply seen thewoman running about screaming near anentry path to Bethany Hill Park in the trendyintown neighborhood of Tower-Town . Hiscivic duty had been to deliver her to hospitalemergency, and now, from the officer’s bestunderstanding of the driver’s broken English, his only desire was to drive away and forget
ever seeing a young woman with missinghands.Further investigation revealed that the neatlyattired lady carried full identification in hershoulder bag and that she was an elementaryschool teacher named Andrea Paxton, age 28,single and a resident of a rather plushtownhouse above Tower-Town Square, anarea rarely visited by central Valleyview’snightly round of violence. As the woman wasunwilling or unable to speak, little otherinformation was gained at the time.II.
