FOREWORD This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of lndian Standards on 21 July 1989, after the draft finalized by the Wire Ropes and Wire Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Heavy Mechanical Engineering Division Council. The galvanized steel earth wire covered in this standard conductors by various electric utilities in the country.
is used for shielding of electric transmission
The standard is based on specification No. CC-203-932 E Vol-II earth wire, issued by the National Thermal Power Corporation.

GALVANIZEDSTRANDFOREARTHINGSPECIFICATION
1 SCOPE 1.1 This standard covers requirements for galvanizsd steel earth strand used for overhead transmission purposes. 2 REFERENCES 2.1 The following Indian Standards are necessary adjuncts to this standard: IS No. IS 2363 : 1981
Title 4.2 Denrity
The density of galvanized steel wire at a temperature of 20C may be taken as 7.8 g/cm3. 4.3 CoeIctent of Linear Expansion
The value of coefficient of linear expansion for galvanized steel wire used may be taken a1 115 X 1W6 per C. 5 CONSTRUCTION 5.1 The construction of the galvanized shall be as given in Annex A. strand

5.2 All steel strands shall be smooth, uniform and free from all imperfections, such as spills and splits, die marks, scratches, abrasion and kinks after drawing and also after stranding. 5.3 The joints shall be allowed in individual wires and the distances between the two joints shall not be less than 15 m. 6 DIMENSIONS
AND TOLERANCES
6.1 The dimensions and manufacturing tolerances shall be permitted in the diameter of individual steel strands and lay length of the earth wire as given in Annex A. 7 STANDARD LENGTH
3 TERMINOLOGY
3.1 Terms given in IS 2363 : 1981 sl~dll bc: appli-
7.1 The standard length of the strand shall be between I 500 to 2 000 m. A tolerance of 15 percent on the standard length shall be permitted. 7.2 Unless otherwise agreed to between manufacturer and purchaser, random length shall also be accepted provided no length is less than half of the standard length of the strand offered by the manufacturer and the total quantity of random length is not more than 10 percent of the total quantity in each shipment. 8 TESTS 8.1 Breaking Load 8.1.1 Breaking load of earth wire straud when tested according to procedure given in 8.1.2 shall have minimum breaking load as given in Annex 11. 8.1.2 A circle perpendicular to the WA:, c~f IIIC strand shall be marked at two ~~laccs on a barnpIe
of earth wire strand of minimum 5 m length buitably compressed on the dead end clamps at either end. The load shall be increased at a steady rate upto 50 percent of minimum hreakiog load. The circle drawn shall not be distorted due to relative
cable to this standard. 4 MATERIAL 4.1 The steel wire shall be drawn from carbon steel wire rods produced by either the acid or the basic open hearth process, the electric furnace
process or the basic oxygen process and shall have the following chemical composition : Elemcn t Carbon Prrreu tagc Compo.~itiOn 055 Max

movement of strands. The applied load shall then be increased until the failing load is reached and the value is recorded. 8.2 Elongation The elongation of individual wire when measured on 200 mm galvanized length after breakage, shall not be less than 4 percent. 8.3 DC Resistance
8.3.1 Test
If any of the test pieces from two additional samples fail, the batch represented shall be deemed not to comply with the standard.
10 SAMPLING 10.1 Lot PLAN
All the strands of the same size manufactured from the same material under similar conditions of production shall be grouped together to constitute a lot. 10.2 For ascertaining the conformity of lot the procedure for sampling and inspection as given in IS 2500 ( Part 1 ) : 1973 shall be followed. 10.2.1 For dimension a single sampling plan with inspection level IV and AQL of 25 percent as given in Tables I and 2 of IS 2500 ( Part 1 ) : 1973 shall be followed. 10.2.2 For tests a single sampling plan with inspection level I and AQL of 25 percent as given in Tables 1 and 2 of IS 2500 ( Part 1 ) : 1973 shall he followed.
11 PACKING 11.1
The earth wire shall be tested accord&g to 8.3.2. The values of DC resistance shall be as given in Annex A. 8.3.2 On a strand of minimum 5 m length, two contact clamp shall be fixed. The resistance shall be measured by a Kelvin bridge by placing the clamps initially from one end and subsequently one metre apart. The test shall be repeated at each metre length and the value recorded. The value obtained shall be corrected to the value at 20C. NOTE - These tests are type tests and shall be conducted once on a sample/samples of strand for every 400 km length of production from each manufacturing facility.
8.4 Wrapping
Test
The material shall be suitably packed before despatch in strong non-returnable wooden drums.
The wire shall meet the requirement in 12.4 of IS 398 ( Part 2 ) : 1976. 8.5 Galvanizing
Test
specified
11.2 Two standard lengths of earth wire shall be wound to each drum. 11.3 Each strand shall be individually welded to prevent parting of the two lengths at a tension less than 15 kN. The two ends where the first length finishes and the second length starts, shall be clearly marked with adhesive tape or cut off. The length between the two marks shall be treated as scrapped and shall not be taken into account for measurement purposes.
12.1
The zinc coating shall conform to requirements of heavily coated wire as laid down in IS 4826 : 1979 ( see Annex A ). 8.6 Torsion Torsion wires. shall

9 REJECTION
9.1 If any of the test pieces first selected fail to pass test, three further samples from the same batch shall be selected for testings, one of which shall be from the length from which the original test sample was takefl.
9.2 The test pieces from both these additional samples shall satisfy the requirement of the tests.
12 MARKING shall have the following Each drum informations: a) Manufacturers name or trade-mark; b) Drum number; c) Size of earth wire; dl Length of wire; c) Gross weight of drum with earth wire; and f) Arrow marking for unwinding.
