From the PRESIDENT

Dear Member, As you see from other articles in this issue of Open Air, there are some very exciting developments here at KRCB North Bay Public Media. Launching a new format for our radio station is a momentous undertaking and one which we did not begin lightly. KRCB FM has always been fortunate to enjoy a strong pool of talented volunteers and as we have moved through this transition, it has been no different. Scores of dedicated programmers, engineers, hosts, and helpers of all kinds have taken on the many details and tasks. We are in their debt. Listen in and let us know what you think. Thanks for your support which makes this all happen!

A New Sound at KRCB 91 FM
Brian Griffith returns as music director KRCB Radio is creating a unique new sound beginning this month, and weve brought popular local radio personality Brian Griffith back to help guide it. Beginning November 4, well be serving up an innovative blend of news, music, and North Bay conversation. Our daytime hours, from 8 am to 4 pm, will now feature a lively mix of contemporary folk and Americana, indie and world music, and other styles, leavened with regular short segments focusing on local events, issues, and activities. While we have loved being the Sonoma County home of classical music, changes in the media landscape have made this change necessary, said KRCB Program Director Robin Pressman. We chose this new format because there is a world of thrilling music that does not fit the format of most commercial radio stations. KRCB has this great opportunity to present a depth and breadth of vibrant music that is under-represented on the radio dial.

Brian Griffith

Robin Pressman

Brian Griffith, who many listeners will remember from his tenure as KRCBs Morning Edition host from 2000 to 2006, assumes the role of our music director, and will bring his engaging wit and thorough knowledge of contemporary music back to the public radio airwaves, hosting KRCBs new music service from 8 am to noon. Hes looking forward to being back on the air on KRCB and to taking on the challenge of helping to reshape the stations musical identity. The retooled morning show will continue to showcase local news and public affairs, with the North Bay Report, Sonoma Spotlight, California Update, and other current events features including a daily Newsmaker Interview segment interspersed with the musical mix tailored for North Bay listeners. Robin Pressman will also take over daily music hosting in the afternoons, while continuing to host Our Roots Are Showing, the popular Saturday afternoon folk and acoustic music show she has shared with Steve DeLap for 19 years. While some familiar elements of KRCBs programming will be retired to make way for this new endeavor, many others will continue in revised forms or new time slots. Among these are our NPR News programs, Fresh Air, and favorite programs like The Thistle and Shamrock and West Coast Live. Our broadcasts of the Santa Rosa Symphony concerts will continue as part of our Sunday Concert featuring all genres of music presented in the North Bay. KRCB FM is being re-imagined. We invite you to embrace the change.

See the full revised schedule on pages 14-15.

SPONSOR Spotlight
Redwood Community Health
Redwood Community Health is a network of sixteen community health centers with over forty sites in Marin, Napa, Sonoma, and Yolo Counties. Our mission is to improve access and care for underserved and uninsured people in our four counties. In 2012, our member health centers provided services to over 220,000 individuals. Redwood Community Health has successfully expanded our Healthy Kids Program to maximize coverage for uninsured children. Over the last year, Redwood Community Health has collaborated with community partners to use this success to develop an outreach and enrollment infrastructure to maximize enrollment of the thousands of individuals who will become eligible for health insurance in 2014 under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). We estimate that among the 136,000 uninsured in our four-county area, 88,000 will be eligible for coverage through the Covered CA health insurance exchange. Of those, 32,000 will be eligible for Medi-Cal for the first time and 43,000 will be eligible for exchange subsidies and tax credits. These enrollments will provide patient centered health homes for thousands, improving their health and reducing unnecessary costs, such as extensive use of hospital emergency rooms and chronic care treatments. KRCB North Bay Public Media is proud to partner with Redwood Community Health.
