VERSION 1:
Remembering names, simple as it seems, requires a skill. To master such socially beneficial skill, the following steps are strongly recommended.First and foremost, even before you are introduced to people and expected toremember their names, bear in mind the importance of the ability to recall names. To some people, the names given by their parents are the most beautiful words in the world whichshould be treasured and respected. Keeping forgetting their names make people wonder how much you appreciate them. Therefore, instead of using your forgetfulness as an excuse,

you are advised to take the skill of remembering names seriously and start building it assoon as possible. With such awareness, you are prepared for the next steps which include payingattention to and trying to repeat the introduced names during the conversation. It iscertainly impossible to remember names if you fail to listen to them clearly and carefully atthe very first time. You can even politely ask for the spelling, origin or explanation for long, difficult or unique names. Repeating, on the other hand, is believed to be the best way toturn short-term memories to long-term ones. So, use them a couple of times during your conversation, for example: “(Name), nice to meet you!” or “What is your job, (name)?” Toavoid appearing phoney to the names’ owners by overdoing it, it is a good idea to repeat insilence to yourself.Once the conversation is paused or done, you will have to move onto finding links between people and their names and writing everything down for further practice. Theselast but not least steps ensure the persistence of the names as well as their owners in your memory. You can form the connection of people and their names by picking distinguishingfeatures out of the owners, rhyming the name or challengingly yet effectively, turning thename into a picture. For instance, for Katherine Bridge, as the short form of her first nameis pronounced the same as “cat”, you can draw a picture of a cat walking on the bridgewhile re-visualize her face. Writing down everything from the full names to the links youcome up with will also be the best way to revise later as practice makes perfect.By considering remembering names a significant skill and building it with theseduring-and-after-the-conversation steps, hopefully you will never embarrass yourself anddisappoint others by calling them wrong names.(403 words)
