ICONE PAINTIGS FROM THE REVIVALMASTERS

IN THE COLLECTION IN THE MUSEUM OF CITY OF SKOPJE
Summary

The art of icon painting from the period of the 19th

century can be authentically viewed in the small but
representative collection of icons in the Museum
of the City of Skopje. The collection has works of
special value accomplished by the well known and
productive painters of the Revival period. In the museum among fifty works we select two works by the
most representative Macedonian ecclesiastic art in
the 19th century made by Dio Krstevi-Zograf, and
three icons of his contemporary collaborators Petre
Paarov Debranec and Blagoj (Blae) Damjanov who
in addition came from the village of Tresone. The
five selected works: The Holy Virgin and Christ with
St. Stephan and St. Nicholas by Dio Zograf, The
Holy Virgin and Christ with saints by Petre Paarov,
Sts. Constantine and Helen by Blae Damjanov,
and the work of St. John the Forerunner painted by
Damjanov and Petre Paarov are works that illustrate a good quality iconography and mastership. The
painter Dio exceeds in quantity of the opus and the

high quality of the works, however the skills of the

two colleagues convey the icon painting during the
third quarter of the 19th century. A good symbiosis of
the composition elements from the medieval iconography, as well as motifs of West European Baroque
art are demonstrate the five icons which are sealed by
the special painting expression of the three authors.
The release of the geometric building of the composition is notable, the intense color palette, the fine
transfer of the facial tones from light in to shadow,
the detail works of embellishment of the garments,
and the emphasized dynamics of the saint images are
all the features that embody the ecclesiastic art of the
19th century. The originality of these five works, as
well as the other works in the collection in the Museum of the City of Skopje can be perceived as an
interactive review of the chronology and the stylistic
development of icon painting during the 19th century,
and consequently revealing new views for the Macedonia art of the period.
