YES TOHEALTHY COMMUNITIES
We seek to build a coalition of organizations and individuals to help to establish and maintain whole, healthy communities, and we believe jails, prisons, and unfair/over policing and surveillance ofcommunities exacerbate the problems many of us face, especially those of who are already mar-ginalized and targeted; specifically black men, people of color, undocumented people, the eco-nomically disadvantaged, transgendered and gender non-conforming people, those with a lack ofaccess to education, those with differing levels of mental and/or physical ability, people living withmental illness, sex workers, those living with drug and/or alcohol addictions. We demand an immediate and lasting moratorium on all new county or city jails, no new jail expan-sions, and no more new beds in jails. We also demand changes in policing, sentencing, and legisla-tion to reduce the population of people being jailed and sent to prisons. We believe that public money should instead be spent on quality public schools, jobs, and job train-ing, community-based reentry services, health care, food access, drug and alcohol treatment pro-grams, stable and affordable housing, restorative forms of justice, and non-punitive programs thataddress the root causes of violence in our communities.
