SUMMERTIME SURVIVAL 101
Well, it’s official, summer has arrived in Tucsonand the outlook is hot and dry. It is important to practice Summer Safety and protect yourself not just from sunburns, but from dehydration. With our higher temperatures HYDRATION is key to enjoying a fun, activelifestyle during the summer months. During warm weather, itis recommended that we drink
EIGHT 8-oz glasses of waterdaily.
Fluids are vital to our body’s functions as they aid inmetabolism, regulate body temperature, prevent constipationand hydrate cells in the body to function optimally. When the body is NOT properly hydrated, our organs have towork harder. The body then tries to create fluids by breakingdown muscle tissue which is not ideal for maintaining overallgood health. So…BOTTOMS UP! Carry a bottle of water withyou wherever you go, including bus trips to shopping andmedical appointments. Enjoy fruit and keep popsicles on handas a cool and tasty way to get more fluids. To make the most of our summer months, avoid “Peak Heat”hours when exercising outside—remember to walk during theearly mornings or later in the evenings. Some people think about sun protection only when they spend a day at the beachor pool. But sun exposure adds up day after day, every time youare in the sun. So
Slip! Slop! Slap! and Wrap
to protect your-self from UV rays:
Slip
on a shirt,
Slop
on sunscreen,
Slap
ona hat and
Wrap
on sunglasses to protect the eyes and sensitiveskin around them. These steps provide the best sun protectionwhen used together. The American Academy of Dermatologyrecommends using products with an SPF (Sun ProtectionFactor) of at least 30. The SPF number represents the level of  protection against UVB rays the sunscreen provides. There’s a lot going on at Fellowships Square this summer, bothindoors and out, so keep your body hydrated, practice sunsafety and enjoy a healthy and fun summer!
