will never forget.That is the day whenLowry made the decision toleave her ex-husband after  being verbally and physi-cally abused for more thanfour years.Lowry said she was sit-ting at home and though, “Ican’t do this anymore.”When Lowry’s divorcewas final in 2008, she strug-gled to get back on her feet because she did not makeenough money from her  part-time job. She movedfrom a seven-bedroomhouse to a one-bedroomapartment with her twochildren from a previous re-lationship. She was evictedthree times in one year andcould not feed her childrenon some days.“I use to steal people’slunches from work to feedmy children,” she said.“When I sent my children upnorth to my family in Buf-falo, N.Y., I slept in my car many nights because I wasashamed and embarrassedto let people know my situ-ation.”Another day Lowrywill never forget is Aug. 9,2009. On that day, her pas-tor preached a sermon aboutfinding purpose in life.“He said your purposeis usually tied to somethingyou’ve gone through in your  past,” she said. “I’ve alwaysliked to help women; I justdidn’t know how I was go-ing to help them. When hesaid that, I started to believethat I went through my situ-ation so I can help womencome out of their situation.”In 2009, Lowry founded“The Still Standing Foun-dation.” The foundation,which is housed at the Porter Sanford Performing Artsand Community Center, is anonprofit organization that provides an outlet for vic-tims of domestic violenceto become survivors. Itencourages self-empower-ment, self-esteem, personaland spiritual growth. Thefoundation offers variouslife skill classes that aredesigned to help victimsafter the leave their abusivespouse.“We do a domesticviolence support group on

does.That’s what Murray, a48-year-old south DeKalb resi-dent and single mother of four,called a cyst she found on her  breast in June.“I couldn’t ignore the cyst,”she said. “To me it was a bless-ing from God. He was tellingme there is something reallywrong.”Usually, Murray, whosegrandmother died from breastcancer in 1993, goes to the doc-tor every December for a check-up and gets a mammogram ev-ery other year. But in December,she skipped broke her routine.Six months later, “a cyst popped up out of nowhere onmy left breast,” she said.“I was alarmed becauseit hurt. It was painful and itwas abnormal. It was an eye-opener,” Murray said. “It was anindicator for something that wasmuch more serious going on inmy body that I would not haveknown about had the cyst notcome up because I don’t haveanything that [I] could feel thatwould indicate that I had a prob-lem with my breast.“That’s why I said, ‘I’ll get amammogram later. I don’t haveany lumps. Nothing hurts. Ev-ery time I get a mammogramthey’re always normal.’”Murray, who was in themiddle of planning a family va-cation, decided to deal with theissue after the vacation. On July8 she got a mammogram.“They took lots and lots of  pictures,” Murray said. “It wasnot like a routine mammogram.”Eight days later she had a biopsy. Doctors aspirated thecyst and discovered that it was benign.“But they did find a 10 cmarea of calcification under thecyst…that came back malig-

and improved mobilitythrough the I-285/I-20 inter-change.
“We expected improve
-ment, but the actual num- bers go way beyond our 
expectations,” he said.
In January 2012, theGeorgia Department of Transportation began con-structing the 4.73 mile project, which stretchesfrom the I-20/I-285 inter-change east to Panola Road.The constructed barrier-separated CD lanes were built to eliminate the weave
 between trafc entering I-20from I-285 and exiting I-20
at Wesley Chapel Road.According to GDOT, the$31 million project allowedthe department to use itstime-saving design-buildcontracting process in whichthe project’s design and con-struction are combined intoone contract and a corre-sponding seamless, continu-ous process.McMurry said traveltime during rush-hour hasimproved more than 100 percent.“During rush-hour, travelin the new eastbound CDlanes from Columbia Driveto east of Panola Road has been reduced from 18.3minutes to only 6.2 min-utes–a 195 percent improve-ment,” he said. “A traveltime savings of 10 minutes
or more is very signicant
and meaningful, for every-one.”Some Lithonia residents,such as
