Interning at Boulder Weekly

Boulder Weekly has won Society of Professional Journalists and Association of Alternative Newsweeklies awards for its environmental and investigative reporting, arts coverage and political writing. The paper has a history of drawing public attention to environmental threats and consistently advancing the stories on fracking and GMOs, as well as exposing concerns with transparency in local government. Interns are expected to complete 15 to 20 hours of work per week, depending on school requirements for course credit, scheduled at their convenience between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. All internships can serve as credit for Reporting 3 and Newsgathering 2. Environmental news internship Boulder Weekly recently launched an environmental news reporting internship for fired up future journalists interested in breaking big stories, advancing coverage on ongoing issues and engaging with the local science and environment organizations to keep our readers informed on their work. Interns will write news stories for the weekly paper and the environmental magazine, Boulderganic, and will have the opportunity to contribute to larger, ongoing environmental investigations and undertake enterprise reporting of their own. Clips will be magazine length and caliber and mentorship will be focused on cultivating explanatory reporting and narrative writing skills. Candidates can submit a cover letter, resume and at least three writing samples to Elizabeth Miller at emiller@boulderweekly.com. Cuisine internship Interns will pitch and write stories for the Cuisine section of the weekly paper, working directly with the section editors to hone their ideas and revise their writing. Interns will be expected to produce at least one article a week of roughly 1,000 words. Interns are encouraged to pitch stories for other sections if they have an interest in writing for them. Editors are available to discuss interns stories throughout the reporting and writing process. Internships also offer the opportunity to take photos and write for special editions. Nonfiction writing samples must demonstrate an understanding of organization, synthesis, sourcing and competence in writing skills.
