But this one should be a news to you!Chennai has one such road, laid using waste plastic to a greater extent. It is theJambulingam Street in Nungambakkam. This road is now 6 years old.Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Madras, elaborates the salient features of Plastic roads. New Playground at Koyambedu
The Chennai Corporation is developing a spaciousplayground cum park at Jai Nagar with all basic facilities andkids play equipment. This playground is getting ready along100 Feet Road, opposite CMBT Koyambedu.
Metro Rail Project work begins
The first phase of work for the Chennai Metro RailProject has started with soil testing along Jawaharlal NehruRoad, near Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar and at Koyambedu.This phase of the project will link Washermanpet withChennai Airport via Egmore, Mount Road. The Secondphase links Fort with St.Thomas Mount via Anna Nagar,Koyambedu, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar. Out of the totaldistance of 46.5 kms about 20 kms will be underground andthe rest on an elevated structure.
Chennai student wins IntelInternational Award
J.Vishnu, a student class XI at Chettinad Vidyashram haswon the second prize at the Intel International Science andEngineering Fair 2009 (Intel ISEF) for his innovation onmicrobial fuel cell based on graphite electrode. Hisinnovation under the guidance of Prof. T. S. Natarajan of Indian Institute of Technology Madras, has the potential of reducing the cost of providing power supply to rural areaswhich do not have proper access to power.
Cooum House goes
To provide space for the modern assembly complex, the89 year old Cooum House located on Sivananda Salai isunder demolition. This spacious mansion, built in 1920, wasoriginally meant for ADCs (aide-de-camp) to governorsduring the British Raj. Located close to Admiralty House,once the official residence of governors, the building facesthe Cooum River, which might have given its name.

The new leaders atRosary Matric

Rosary Matriculation Higher Secondary School,Santhome hosted the investiture ceremony for thisyear on June 25. The chief guest for the day wasSister Sahayam of St. Dominics Anglo-Indian HigherSecondary School. The theme for the day was'Leadership is action, not position.'One of the students of the school gave anintroduction about leadership. Followed by a welcomespeech and prayer song sung by the school choir,there was a dance-drama which depicted leadership.The School Pupil Leader, J. Rufina of std XI andAssistant School Pupil Leader, Rina of std IX for theyear 2009-2010 were given their badges of honour bySister Sahayam after which they took their pledge.The House captains along with the AssistantHouse captains, Games Captain and Cultural Captainwere also honoured with their badges. All the Schoolleaders were chosen by conducting election amongthe students, which was held two weeks before.The parents of the leaders were specially invitedby the school on the day of the ceremony. The classcaptains and house leaders of each class also receivedtheir badges after which the school choir sung a songwishing the new leaders.Sister Sahayam addressed the gathering by givinga short speech. She also appreciated the students of Rosary for the discipline they maintain. Theprogramme ended by singing the school song andnational anthem.

Street in Mylapore.There were 15reporters, who hadcome along with thereparents and five seniorstudent reporters of YOCee. Theprogramme started at10.30 am. Revathi, thepublisher of thewebsite gave a brief note on what reportingis. She also explainedabout 5 ‘W’s and 1 ‘H’of writing reports. Allthe students wereengrossed in her talk when, around 11.30am,a journalist from NDTV Hindu, Ms. Gayathri had come toaddress the students.Gayathri shared her experience with the students. She

called five students from the gathering. She had brought acopy of the Down town, supplement of The Hindu withher. She gave them five minutes to go through the paperand later asked them which story they liked most. Sheexplained how thereporters can choose theirarea of interest in writingand getting story ideas fortheir reports.Lastly there wasquestionnaire session andGayathri cleared the doubtsof the student reporters. Allthe students were givenStudent Report's Notebook containing tips and diary onreporting. The seniorreporters were givencertificates. Theprogramme ended at12.30pm.The student reporters selected for this year to reportfor the website www.yocee.in are set on their mission atthis meeting.
