Nut, Bolts, and Costs

Active volunteer firefightersmust earn 50 points during acalendar year to qualify.

Points are earned byresponding to emergencies, holding leadership positions, and attending training.

Those who qualify will have$700 deposited into anaccount to be managed andinvested on their behalf.

Participants will receive alump-sum payment at age 60.

So, the
MOST
this programcan cost is $700 per year, foreach active volunteerfirefighter.

There will be
no new tax
levied on taxpayers to pay forthis program
 –
it will befunded by the general budget.
The Cost Of Voting “No”

 –
Most
people don’t know the
Middletown Fire Department is
“mixed” –
with both paidfiremen and volunteers. Thereare currently only about 125active volunteers who manseven companies (fire trucks,
ladders and pumpers). It’s been
getting more difficult to recruitand retain new volunteers. If thevolunteer system collapses
 –

then Middletown’s taxpayers
will be forced to pay for a fullypaid system (like Newburgh
’s),
costing millions of dollars moreper year, and reducing the levelof coverage.
