Fr Timothy Finigan
Fr Finigan was born and baptised in the parish of St Cecilia, North Cheam but the
family soon moved to the parish of Our Lady of the Annunciation, Addiscombe.
Father has four sisters (Jane, Joan, Mary and Sarah) and a brother, Gerry, who sadly
died in 1979 at the age of 23. He attended St Mary’s Junior School and the John
Fisher School in Purley where he first met Fr Roger Nesbitt, who founded the Faith
Movement on the advice of Fr Edward Holloway. They were both a major influence
in his responding to a priestly vocation.
He completed the first year of studies at St John’s Seminary, Wonersh and was asked
by Archbishop Cowderoy to take up his place at Corpus Christi College, Oxford,
where he gained first class honours in Philosophy and Psychology. From there, he
went on to the Venerable English College in Rome where he was captain of the
cricket XI, and was elected Senior Student. He studied Latin under Fr Reginald Fos-
ter, gaining the Diploma in Latin Letters summa cum laude. He was ordained to the
Sacred Priesthood by Bishop John Jukes at Our Lady of the Annunciation, Addis-
combe on 28 July 1984 and then returned to Rome for a year to complete the Li-
cence in Sacred Theology, specializing in Patristics and the History of Theology.
He has been engaged in parish work throughout his priestly life; his first appoint-
ment was as assistant priest at the Sacred Heart Parish, Camberwell where he stayed
for five and a half years, administering the parish for a brief time after the death of
the parish priest, Fr John Walsh. He was then appointed as assistant priest at Our
Lady and St Philip Neri, Sydenham in 1991, and Parochial Administrator at St John
Fisher, Thamesmead in 1994. In 1997, he became Parish Priest of Our Lady of the
Rosary, Blackfen. In 2001, he was appointed Dean of Bexley.
In addition to his parish work, Fr Finigan was Director of Studies for the Permanent
Diaconate from 1989-1999 and has been visiting tutor in Sacramental Theology at
Wonersh in 2004. He also lectures in theology at St Hugh’s Charterhouse, Parkmin-
ster. He founded the Association of Priests for the Gospel of Life, is a Trustee of
the Faith Movement, a member of the Executive Council of the Guild of Ransom,
and a member of the St Nicholas Study Group of the Society of St Catherine of Sie-
na. He was editor of the Faith Magazine from 1991-1999, has written numerous arti-
cles and reviews for various books and publications, and writes a regular column in
the Catholic Herald as well as a popular blog “The Hermeneutic of Continuity.” In
addition to general theological, moral, and spiritual topics, he is particularly inter-
ested in the relationship between science and religion, the pro-life apostolate, the use
of information technology for the spread of the Gospel, and the restoration of the
traditional liturgy of the Church.
