DATATECTIVE ANALYSIS

Time, place and space have a huge roll in disasters from all over the world. In this task, we were assigned to research and make 3 observations in order to analyze different volcanoes and earthquakes. I have used my raw data graph above to find the differences and similarities about each earthquakes and volcanoes. Below are my analysis and observation: The first observation that I have discovered was the location of each places. I have realized that there are many similarities about where the disaster has occurred. 6 of my disasters are located were in The Ring of Fire (the red line), this could not be and accident. The red line that I have drawn represents The Ring of Fire, it indicates where there are a lot of earthquakes occur. I have found out that The Ring of Fire has about 400 volcanoes and it is where over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes live. This means that there are a lot of tectonic plates movement near Asia meaning there is a higher possibility for a natural disaster to happen near Asia. Secondly, the second observation that I have noticed is that ranking for my top four disasters are about the time that the disaster have occurred, I have discovered that the disaster with a lot of death toll happened in the morning or at night. This is because there are more people that are asleep. As the earthquake hits, they dont have enough time to survive as their homes fall and they either die or get badly injured. In terms of infrastructure, it depends on the area of the earthquake. It also depends on each hour. Poor people have infrastructural homes which might not be that powerful, while rich people have infrastructural homes which are well supported and may not collapse. The last observation that I have discovered is that before the year 2004, there were more deaths toll according to my raw data graph above. For example a 9 magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami has hit Tohuku, Japan in 2011 with 28000 lives lost. Tohuku is a city with a lot of different buildings and homes to a lot of people, however, in 1556, a 9 magnitude earthquake without a tsunami had hit Andes (Southern Chile) and it killed over 830000 people. This means that there are a lot of developments in technology about earthquakes and about the tectonic plate movements.
