fromSept. 15-17 engaged alumni and friends in timely andrelevant conversations with a broad array of presenters,including renowned public servants, respected businessleaders and two Pulitzer Prize winners.A DePauw Discourse 2005 highlight for many alumni and members of the DePauw community was the return to campus on Sept. 17 of Vernon E. Jordan ’57, managing director of Lazard Frères & Co., LLC. He moderateda discussion on “Civility & Politics” with longtime Indiana U.S. SenatorBirch Bayh and Father Richard McBrien, Crowley-O’Brien Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame.The three-day symposium led with a Sept. 15 presentation by Paul A. Volcker, chairman of the Independent Inquiry Committee into theUnited Nations Oil-for-Food Program and former chairman of the FederalReserve. In the week prior to his DePauw Discourse visit, Volcker deliveredhis committee’s final report to the U.N. Security Council, criticizing theSecretary General and calling for urgent reforms. Volcker joined DePauw Associate Professor of Economics and Management Kerry Pannell in aconversation that spanned the future of the U.N., state of ethical standardsin today’s institutions and his analysis of the U.S. economy.DePauw Discourse 2005’s second day began with many alumni carryingtheir

books into historic Meharry Hall to hear a conversationbetween Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author JamesB. Stewart Jr. ’73, former Disney executives Judson C.
