Before we begin:
If you have a lot of data, and particularly your Outlook Personal Folders are
very large, you will probably need a DVD to back everything up. If you only
have a few smaller things and smaller Personal Folders, a CD should be fine.
If you are in doubt, and you have a DVD burner on your machine, Backup to
DVD to be safe.
The next thing you want to do is create an empty, new folder inside this new
window to store everything you want to backup in one convenient place. This
will help avoid any confusion and help keep you organized while you grab all
the files you want to backup. This is especially important if you have lots of
data. To do this, right-click your desktop and open up the \u2018New\u2019 menu and
click on \u2018Folder\u2019 at the top. You may want to name the new folder \u201cBackup\u201d
with today\u2019s date. This will help when the time comes to restore your data,
so you know which backup is the most recent.
My Documents is where we always recommend users store all their data for this exact reason; it makes backing up your data so much easier. Open My Computer and then open your Local Disk (C:) drive.
Inside Documents and Settings you will see several folders. One of them has the same name as the username you use to log into the computer with. This is the next folder you want to open. For example, my username is jcampbel so I need to find the corresponding folder:
