Pesticides should always be stored offof the ground to reduce the chances offloodwaters damaging the containersand potentially contaminating thestorage area (or other objects storedthere). If the recent storm resulted inwater damage to a pesticide containerin your home, follow these steps.1.Keep children and pets away fromthe area.2.Wear rubber gloves (preferablychemical-resistant gloves) andprotective eyewear when handlingdamaged pesticide containers. Ifavailable, a rubberized apron willalso help protect your clothing frompesticides. If there is standing water in thearea where you store your pesticides, wear rubber boots or waders. Pesti-cide-contaminated water may soakinto sneakers, ordinary shoes, or bootsand be absorbed through your skin.3. Collect spilled solid pesticides(granular, dust, or powder) and, ifpossible, put it back in the originalcontainers. Useable productsshould be applied to an appropriatesite (i.e., one listed on the productlabel). If you don’t think that thechemical is useable, place it in aclosable container or plastic bagand dispose of it. Note: Do notpour pesticides down the drain ortoilet.Soak up spilled liquid pesticideswith clay-based cat litter or anotherabsorbent material. Shovel the litterinto a garbage bag for appropriatedisposal, and label the bag.If you must transfer a pesticide toanother container for disposal, clearly label this container as to itscontents. Never transfer pesticides tonon-pesticide containers except forimmediate disposal. Never use foodcontainers (e.g., milk or soda bottles)for pesticide storage. Someone mayaccidentally drink the contents.Discard rusted or damaged aero-sol cans, following the product labelinstructions.
