The month of October included several ribbon-cuttings, a Business After Hours at St. Joan of Arc and luncheon featuring State Senator Michael Connelly. We traveled to Glen Ellyn for the Luis Arturo Dance Academy ribbon-cutting. It was picked up by the press in Glen Ellyn and made the front page of their local Suburban Life newspaper. Luis and Veronika were great hosts for the event which included dance demonstrations, awards presented by Mayor Broda from a recent contest, the ribbon-cutting and food and beverages, followed by open dancing. Senator Connellys talk was very informative and entertaining as he gave us an update on legislation pending in Springfield and other matters to come before them at the fall veto session. We are very fortunate to have Senator Connelly as one of our representatives. His leadership has brought forth many improvements for our area. The St. Joan of Arc Business After Hours was enjoyable as the staff and Fr. Gabriel and Sister Carolyn made us feel very much at home. Julie LaFond is the representative for St. Joan who also was a great hostess. The food, beverages, and hospitality were excellent. Connie Walsh owner of Walsh Financial assisted by Harriet Rose provided a ribboncutting on Oct. 24th. It was a cold evening which seemed to affect the attendance. They provided a wonderful buffet of food and we thank them for the great hospitality. Once again we had a fantastic response to Trick or Treat in Downtown Lisle. Over 800 ghosts, goblins, and super heroes visited to obtain treats from the business owners. The weather was good and a great time was had by all. Thanks to the downtown businesses for your generosity. With November on the horizon we have a couple of significant events. There will be a breakfast on Corporate Social Responsibility on November 13th at Wheatstack. A great panel has been assembled to provide information on their programs. Our luncheon on the 21st will be a very informative presentation on customer service provided by Wallace Long. His programs have had rave reviews at other nearby chambers so we look forward to a great learning experience. The Business After Hours will be at the West Suburban Community Pantry on November 20th. You wont want to miss this multi-chamber event. Congratulations to Paula Gleason and Rob Salerno for being appointed to the Lisle Convention & Visitors Bureau. Finally on November 28th we give thanks for all we have and spend time with family and friends. I am very thankful for our staff of Jill Eidukas and Jen Sumner who do so much to keep our office operating in a professional manner and for a terrific Board of Directors led by Chair Paula Gleason. This group is very engaged and committed to providing a strong and viable chamber. Happy Thanksgiving!

Mission Statement To facilitate, advocate and cultivate opportunities for the Lisle area business communities.

The changing colors of the season bring a welcome feeling of fall as the days get shorter and the nights get colder; and we commit to encourage the spirit of thankfulness throughout the Thanksgiving holiday season. This is a good time to consider all the good things we have been blessed with. We live in the United States and enjoy freedoms that do not exist in many countries of the world. In this land of plenty, we should not lose sight of the fact that even while we live in DuPage County, one of the wealthiest areas in the world, there are many individuals struggling to support their families. What better time to choose a charity of your choice, and if you are able, commit to make a contribution. The Chamber has many not for profit charity members who can direct your contribution where it will be used best. A very large thank you is extended to Bill Kuglich, who facilitated the Board of Directors Strategic Planning meeting and complimentary lunch at Molex on October 16th, as always, a very hospitable host! Other Chamber October events included two Lisle Executive Networking Group luncheons and a Women in Business lunch focusing on Linkedn information. Ribbon cutting and grand opening of Luis Arturo Dance Academy in Glen Ellyn was a very festive event with a presentation of delicious food, drinks and entertaining dance routines by award-winning students, who were presented with their awards by Mayor Broda. A quite successful Business After Hours was hosted by St Joan of Arc providing us all with more appetizing food. Amongst all this was our general membership luncheon featuring Senator Michael Connelly with updates on Springfield. Another ribbon-cutting at Walsh Financial in their new Lisle location, complete with an array of delectable food and drinks. Halloween trick-or-treating in downtown on Main Street was an overwhelming success, including individual and group photos by Robert Kelly Studio. We are very happy to welcome Costco, Piccolo Fiore Designs, Dr.Todd Martin, Naperville Bank & Trust, Ron Sandek, Zanos Hair Design, Baird & Warner, Beer Dogging, The BOMC, Runners 4 Wellness and Blend Beauty to the Lisle Chamber and anticipate their continued involvement and commitment to Chamber networking events. Save the date of February 7, 2014 for the annual Dancing with the Chamber Stars Dinner Dance to be held at the Lisle Hilton Hotel. The underlying theme will be Luau in Lisle and the committee has already secured six professional dance instructors and confirmed five of the six Chamber dancers. Sure to be fun! As my term as your Chairman is winding down, I recall that over the last ten months I have discussed not only the mission of the Chamber but also how the Chamber is committed to provide opportunities to grow your business with integrity and honesty. At the recent Board of Directors Strategic Planning workshop, the primary focus was to develop a Vision, Mission and Action Plan for 2014. The Chamber vision statement is: To advocate for business and the revised Chamber mission statement is: To facilitate, advocate and cultivate opportunities for the Lisle area business communities. As we move into 2014, the Board of Directors continues to Build a Foundation of Commitment and intends to develop a standard operating procedure and a marketing plan that will add value to your membership; this is scheduled for presentation in February. Best wishes for a comfortable and happy Thanksgiving!

General Membership LuncheonSenator Michael Connelly

The government affairs committee of the Lisle Area Chamber had recommended that we bring in speakers from our government for updates each year. State Senator Michael Connelly was the guest speaker at the October general membership luncheon at the Lisle Hyatt Hotel. Senator Connelly updated the attendees about what is new in Springfield. Pension issues have not been resolved for the state workers. Congress is diligently working on bringing businesses to the state and keeping businesses in the state. Senator Connelly answered many of the questions from attendees and stayed after the luncheon to speak with members. *Residents of the 21st District can recycle unwanted household items November 2 at a Recycling Event in Naperville being sponsored by Senator Michael Connelly. The Recycling Event is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to noon, November 2 at Jefferson Junior High School, 1525 Loomis St., in Naperville . Local charities and businesses will be accepting Senator Michael Connelly gently-used items, and electronics recyclers will be on hand to take old computer equipment, telephones and TVs. Participants include Douglas Ace Hardware, Elgin Recycling, Goodwill Store & Donation Center, Habitat for Humanity, Naperville Noon Lions Club, S.C.A.R.C.E., and Working Bikes. *

Business After Hours St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church & School
St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and School hosted the October Business After Hours for the Lisle Area Chamber members, chamber ambassadors, and board members. Mary Ann Bero, Director of Development enjoys bringing the organizations together every year in the fall. Sister Carolyn and Father Gabriel welcomed us with an update of what the students have been learning since last years Business After Hours. The school project was NASAs Microgravity Project which involved every grade level and each grade was assigned a special mission to complete as part of overall project submission. Students were involved with the design, procedure development, and background research needed for the experiment. The younger students researched weather and geographical information on Houston, Texas. The PSO sponsored a patch contest which the winning design would be worn by the team on their microgravity flight. In July 2013, the St Joan of Arc NASA team traveled to Houston for eleven days. The team had the opportunity to speak with astronauts and tour NASA facilities. The team of 4 teachers was one of only seven educator teams across the country selected for this unique opportunity. They shared what they were learning with their students through social media. To read more about this great experience please visit www.sjalisle.org.

Trick or Treat on Main Street

The downtown street of Main in Lisle was shaking and rattling with the bustling of little feet in the adventures of looking in local businesses for treats. Many merchants were open and gave out treats, toothbrushes and glow sticks. Robert Kelly Studio treated them to a free photograph. Over 800 trick-or-treaters were seen throughout the downtown streets on October 26, 2013. Accucare Home Health Services, Inc.
