THE TIME FOR LUNCH PETITION & PLATFORM
Ready-to-print copies of our
petition
and
platform
are on
pages 2
and
3-4,
respectively.
Whenyou’re gathering signatures in public, you’ll want to have copies of both on hand. Here’s why:
The Time for Lunch petition is a one-sentence statement that we’re asking people to sign in order to show their support for the goal of our campaign: to get real food in schools. The purpose of apetition is to be able to display how many people our movement represents, e.g. “50,000 peoplehave shown their support for providing America’s children with real food at school.”
Signing apetition is the simplest and quickest way for supporters to get involved
—and by sharingtheir email addresses, petition-signers give us the opportunity to follow up with them, offer moreways to support the campaign and help them climb the “ladder of engagement.”The Time for Lunch platform, on the other hand, is the full document explaining the first stepswe’re asking Congress to take in order to give schools the resources to serve real food.
Whenyou’re asking someone to sign the petition, it’s a good idea to have a copy of the platformon hand, so you can show people what they’re supporting
.When you’re writing or calling a legislator, use the language in the platform to make your point.Legislators listen to people who live in their districts, especially people who take the time to writeor call.
Ten phone calls from constituents is often more compelling than 50,000 signaturesfrom people who live elsewhere
. That means the petition is less about making a direct impacton the Child Nutrition Act and more about building and galvanizing our movement. Here are some ideas for gathering signatures in public:
•
Setup a table at farmers’ markets, food events and film screenings.
•
Get kids involved.
•
Keep copies in your backpack and at your desk at work, in case someone you meetsomeone wants to get involved.
