The mission of the Pennsylvania Commission for Women (PCW) is to identify and advance thediverse needs and interests of Pennsylvania women and girls; to inform, educate and advocate forits constituents; and to provide opportunities to empower women and girls to reach their highestpotential. The Commission exists under the Governor's Executive Order in the Executive Branch ofPennsylvania state government. The Pennsylvania Commission for Women is a proactive, nonpartisan group with a shared vision. The Commission strives to heighten awareness of women's issues, advocate for and influencelegislation that improves women's lives, promote women for appointed positions in government, encourage the development of and access to funding for women-owned businesses, and serve asa liaison between government and nongovernmental groups and organizations whose purposerelates to the interest of women. In addition, the Commission is responsible for monitoring women'seducational and employment needs and opportunities, promoting the upward mobility of womenand providing the Governor and General Assembly with reports and recommendations forlegislative or other government action. The Pennsylvania Commission for Women also maintains ahotline, website and current directory of programs affecting women that are administered by stateagencies. This Commission was established in 1974. The formation of a Woman's Commission legitimizedmany concerns of the women's movement and brought them into the mainstream of the politicalprocess. PCW has evolved from its initial purpose of bringing the laws of the Commonwealth intocompliance with the Equal Rights Amendment. While still a vehicle for change, today's Commissionis an ardent advocate for health care, economic stability, education and human rights. It alsoencourages the formation of county commissions for women and facilitates coalitions amongwomen's organizations across Pennsylvania. In keeping with its mission, the PennsylvaniaCommission for Women continues to break down barriers, gain footholds and empower the womenof Pennsylvania.Leslie StilesExecutive Director
