he arrival of the Seacom cablebrings the prospect of cheapand affordable broadband to SA,and should be a catalyst for the development of much neededcompetition in the industry. Toparaphrase NYU professor ClayShirky, it is only when a technology can be taken forgranted by everyone that its usesbecomes apparent. I’m lookingforward to seeing what the widespread penetration of the Internet might mean for SA, botheconomically and socially.Just like the Seacom cable, the announcement of Google’sChrome Operating System fills my heart with joy and happiness. The OS market domination by Microsoft’s Windowsdid nobody any favours, and competition will benefit everyoneswitching on a PC in the morning. In the same breath, pointyour browser towards Microsoft’s Bing search engine(www.bing.com). As a much needed alternative to Google’sdomination of the search space, you can do worse than thepicturesque Bing. Hurrah for competition.Mike Joubert <michael@techsmart.co.za>
