What makes marriages last? What makes couples happy?

Is it possible for a so-so marriage to become a great one?

From Dr. Terri Orbuch, the renowned therapist and nationally recognized relationship expert known as The Love Doctor®, comes a book that breaks new ground in marital relationships. The head researcher in a large-scale, unprecedented study funded by the National Institutes of Health—which has followed 373 couples for more than twenty-two years and is ongoing—Dr. Orbuch made some remarkable discoveries about happiness, sexuality, human mating patterns, and relationship longevity. In 5 Simple Steps to Take Your Marriage from Good to Great, she releases the study’s findings to the public in a book for the first time, sharing her insights and never-before-revealed strategies for improving and enhancing your marriage—at every stage.

Do you remember the feeling of first being in love? Based on the latest research about what works in happy marriages, Dr. Orbuch offers an accessible, step-by-step roadmap for reconnecting with those feelings and gaining a deeper appreciation for the things you and your spouse share. She defines the five simple strategies to help couples navigate the daily minefield of marriage…from defusing frustrations that erode your relationship to the simple things that will keep your partner happy…from the 10-minute rule to help you really get to know your spouse to reducing boredom and weeding out unprofitable behaviors.

The auhtor sounds great on the methods elisted for succesful marriage and leads one to read the book- a must read. However not much to offer for Hindu marriages that are arranged because belief in living Hindu relgion is enough to bind them together life long. In India for example arranged marriages fair well ( despite good education for girls and boys) due to the living religion where you find compatible answers from religious texts.I met an Autralian in Mayapore (India) bramhachari just 35 yrs married twice with four children having a double PHd. He did not know his children's whereabouts - he just shrugged his shoulders and he was criticising an old Hindu lady for not knowing certain facts about havan etc.. I stopped him, saying that the old lady was more learned than him since she had looked after a numbder of children and did not ask God anything in return except their well being. Well the learned Aussie stared at me and asked me a couple of questions about hindu relgion and I could answer most of them.He then pointed out that i did not know the relgion much. I told him that I was just 45 yrs looking after my wife and children and then when I have retired ( chotapan) I have all the time in the world to do puja and remember God. He looked astounded and said how do know you all this. I told him I am a Hindu and know it because I follow the relgion to the best of my knowledge -- the reason is that Hindu religion is a living relgion with all answers in our sacred texts and gurus . The Aussie gave up and went his way. But I must say that the book does sounds good for modern Americans . achuta
