I have spent the last 20 yrs with a grouch. In the begining I thought my good nature would rub off on him or that he needed the support of someone who loved him. But that doesn't work happy people don't make miserable people happy, miserable people make happy people miserable. Get out while your still young save yourself there is nothing you can do for them believe me I've tried everything & I'm done trying. I deserve to be happy to, I deserve someone who makes me laugh once in a while. All I get are dirty looks questions from the gestapo rants about everything from his job to politics to our kid, commercials, the dogs I could go on & on. Almost every conversation we have is about whats pissing him off. I'm tired of listening. It's hard on a family when they always feel they are walking on egg shells always trying to avoid making dad mad. I understand he hates his life but he's made us hate our lives too. He doesn't drink or do drugs or hit or yell he's just a very unhappy person making everyone else unhappy too.

Thank you Ruca. I believe you proved my point while attempting to contradict it. We would expect a truly grouchy person to object to the explanation and give some lame reason why their way is so right for them. You provided the perfect object lesson I would not give myself. Thank you for your good wishes. We happy people wish you the best to, though you may not know what to do with it.

I don't want to bum you out, seems like you worked real hard on that essay, but I'm gonna have to go ahead and say that about 95% of your manifesto was far from correct. Being "one of those grouchy people" myself, I feel as though I must attempt to briefly enlighten you and your fellow happy friends while also standing up for my fellow "grouchy" slugs. So here it is: We do very much appreciate friends, family, love, thoughtfullness and your desire to want to help us...YOU GOT THAT PART RIGHT!! However, we also very much appreciate not being told what to do, staying up for four days, sleeping for the next three, our ability to constantly be spontanious no matter the situation, our right to lock ourselves in our room with Elliot Smith's melancholic voice clamoring so loudly for hours on end you'd think we'd go deaf. Our acts of grouchiness are infinate. So I end this little lesson with my most important point, my whole reason for writing this. I appreciate your concern and ideas, but you are not one of us. You will never understand. Ever. So each time you are graced with our grouchiness, it is probubly best that you keep your mouth shut and leave us the hell to ourselves, because most of all we appreciate not having to deal with anyone else but ourselves. With all do respect of course. All the best to you and the happy people, Ruca Grouchy

As Confucius said, "Things being investigated, knowledge became complete. Their knowledge being complete, their thoughts were sincere. Their thoughts being sincere, their hearts were then rectified. Their hearts being rectified, their persons were cultivated. Their persons being cultivated, their families were regulated. Their families being regulated, their states were rightly governed. Their states being rightly governed, the whole kingdom was made tranquil and happy. From the Son of Heaven down to the mass of the people, all must consider the cultivation of the person the root of everything besides."
