The lightpost ballards are really ugly. At a minimum they should be powder-coated some vibrant colors. The paint job on the asphalt is awful. The tones are too muted, the finish is flat. It is not fun. I think there should be some bike lockers installed. They could be used along the perimeter to help screen out the street or replace ballads. I would like to see more active programming. How about game tables with seats facing eachother for chess/dominos/etc. Something for the school kids would also be nice. 1st Choice

The successful pedistrian only spaces are typically located in college towns, which Oakland is not. 16 th Street is very narrow and back ups are occurring often. I like public space. My concern is that the City starts projects they don't have the funds to maintain. The sculpture park in Uptown is primarily a dirt lot surrounded by a chainlink fence. One of the pieces has been knitbombed and has stayed that way for months. The area behind "Remember Them" is a tagger's paradise with the floor covered in graffitti. I understand that funding is available for new projects but a bunch of half finished public space redesign projects with no funding to maintain them adds to blight and the feeling of neglect for public space. This lovely improvement is long overdue and is a welcome addition to the downtown (I work in the Latham Square Building.) For the naysayers I suggest looking at the plaza in front of Plum Bar/ Ikes for what Latham Plaza could become. Seems the triangular part could be reconfigured to allow vehicle access and some on street parking. Maybe there is a way to allow for temporary closures for special events on a weekend or special night, but it seems like total closure is not making it a more appealing destination.

I really like the look of all the trees at Broadway/Telegrap h. When you look up Telegraph from The Fox, it looks very welcoming and if there were an actual park there it might attract more foot traffic as a destination. The Pilot Project is already getting used as a new place to eat lunch or have a conversation. Having a park will also make the Cathedral Building downstairs a much more appealing location and probably boost the value of stores at that end of Telegraph creating a more cohesive/pleasant connection from City Center to the Uptown Neighborhood. Initially I favored removing all traffic but the left lane turn problem convinced me that two narrowed lanes should remain. I assume, by previous question, you mean "on Telegraph between 16th and Broadway." Car traffic lanes on Telegraph between 16th and 17th should also be reduced in size, with wide sidewalks on east side that would serve as extension of plaza (like parklets). Traffic lights on Telegraph/Broadwa y/17th should be looked at by traffic engineers to make sure traffic does not back up too much in intersection. Hopefully Latham Square improvements brings some new retail/eating establishments to Broadway. It should be noted that the closing off Telegraph by Latham is an opportunity to pedestrianize the block on Telegraph up to the 17th or 19th, which could really bring a fabulous change to DTO Opening Telegraph between 16th and Broadway to traffic is totally antithetical to the public space and vitality goals of the Latham Square project. Traffic seems to be functioning fine within the area and any traffic coming through the southbound side of Telegraph would greatly reduce the area of the plaza. In fact, it is fairly frustrating that none of the seating structures or tree boxes are currently in the southbound lanes. People tend to congregate in the shaded areas of Latham Square today and at lunch time the southbound side of the median is in the shade, but there is no seating there.

I think it would be great if Telegraph became a walking street, but residents and business would still need automobile access on the street. The traffic volumes show that this portion of Telegraph isn't necessary for traffic flow. And it has negligent affect on parking. Isn't that a great thing for business? Having the plaza open to traffic one or both ways would ruin the feel of the space- this is a great idea to make people comfortable to relax in urban oakland. I think if you make 16th a two way and make an exit out of telegraph it would increase the flow. otherwise keep it a dead end but yellow zones and loadinging will need to be provided as all of my orders are now 3-6 hours later as it is hard to access these areas. also the diagonal parking on telegraph would help this as well as it would narrow the street and make it more welcoming for pedestrians. also yellow zones for loading need to be included on this block as there are going to be a lot more businesses in own business this area. There is no retail facing Latham square and it seems unlikely that there would be any retail facing the square in the next 10+ years. the best use would be to encourage some outdoor seating adjacent to the cathedral building which is the only possibility for food service/ retail. If there were more parking provided (diagonal parking on both sides of Telegraph) and 16th & 17th Streets were 2-way to San Pablo, it might make it easier for driving shoppers to patronize the businesses at the end of Telegraph. I'd like to be able to ride my bike through the new park (if possible) without disrupting the walkers and sitters. Henrietta Latham wrote one of the first vegetarian cookbooks. The fountain in their honor was erected by the Soceity of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, so maybe they did work around that?
