INTRODUCTION
Almost all impermeable surfaces require some formof surface water drainage. Highways, service andstorage facilities, car parks and pedestrian areas are bestaccommodated by either combined kerb and drainage orlinear drainage systems bearing in mind location, efficiency, traffic loading, maintenance and aesthetics.Marshalls is one of the leading suppliers of drainageproducts and offers a comprehensive range of surface waterdrainage systems to cater for all applications. Marshalls alsounderstands the design principles of Sustainable UrbanDrainage Systems and particularly how designers canachieve sustainable drainage solutions using linear drainagesystems or impermeable pavement design or an appropriatecombination of both systems as the project requires. Two combined kerb and drainage systems are available - theoriginal, well established Beany Block and now the recentaddition of a smaller version, appropriately namedMini Beany. These are complemented by the large capacityMax-E-Channel and Birco Linear drainage systems.
This comprehensive range of drainage options allows thedesigner to cater for:
• Long lengths of highway (several kilometresdepending on carriageway width and gradient)• Large or small paved areas• High storm water intensities• Flat or steep gradients• Heavy vehicular loading• Shallow depth construction• Temporary storm water storage• Appropriate aesthetic finishes• Minimal maintenance The range of linear drainage systems is further enhanced bynew innovative products such as Traffic Drain, LandscapeDrain, Max-E-Channel inlaid covers and Slot Drain. Most importantly, with Marshalls, the optimum economicaldrainage design can be readily achieved. All Marshalls systems comply with the requirements,of the appropriate standard; BS EN 9001, the HighwayAgency’s Specification for Highway Works together with therequirements of British Standard, BS EN 1433:2002.
BS EN 1433:2002
Marshalls’ policy is to manufacture products that, as aminimum requirement, comply with the relevant European,British or Company Standard as appropriate.Following the publication of any European Standard thegovernment recognises that there is a period wherebymanufacturers need to realign their product offer, qualitycontrol and in many cases the manufacturing operations. It is Marshalls' intention that the manufacture of all its lineardrainage products complies with BS EN 1433:2002 withinthe required time frame. The load classification systemdocumented in this Standard is referenced throughout thisDesign Guide. Details of product specific requirements arepublished in the product data sheets.
