Cable television (also called CATV) wasdeveloped in the late 1940’s in communitiesunable to receive television signals.
 The cities of Mahanoy City and Lansford,Pennsylvania as well as Astoria, Oregon, arecredited with having been the first set of communities in the U.S. to offer CATV serviceto its residents.
What is important about such communities isthat it provides a basic blueprint of how cabletelevision started in the U.S. Each examplestarted as a pragmatic solution to theproblem of poor television reception.
