FALL 2013

Volume One. We don't expect you to know who we are, because what you're holding in  your hands is something of a beginning. A first step. A shot in the dark.  At first, it was surprising to us-- how could there not be a single dedicated music magazine in the Santa Barbara area? We live in a community that is, more with each passing year, experiencing something of a creative awakening. Walk the streets of this city and you'll find art galleries, performance artists, nightclubs teeming with concert attendees. DIY spaces scribbled with graffiti histories. Students full of ideas and short on self-doubt. Decades-old radio institutions. Festivals. A whole mixed-up idiosyncratic culture, and not a single youth outlet to serve as its sounding board.Speak Volumes Media (dot com) was a website started to take a snapshot of this culture in motion. This snapshot came out a little fuzzy at first, with some struggle over how to best capture this city within the national music landscape-- over time though, the site has developed with more clarity, expanding to include interviews with artists both local and internationally known. New music from all over. New music from right in your back yard. Original thought pieces from our team of about a half-dozen writers, photographers, designers, and coders. The snapshot has come into focus, or so we'd like to think. Here’s to Volume 2.
