Present Day, Largoom
Gordon found his mobile phone in his pocket. He had had it on him ever sincehe had turned up on the planet. He had used it on a number of occasions tocall for help and contact the others - Matt in particular. He pressed a fewbuttons on it and the screen lit up. Shining the light over the metal object inhis left hand allowed him to view it in much greater detail. He could see theneedles behind the glass, turning as he tilted the object, eventually stopping sothe red end showed one direction and the blue end showed another. Thecompass, which he could now see quite clearly in the light produced by thephone, was mainly gold in colour, with engravings round the side. The centreneedle and the directions were underneath a glass covering which was quitedirty due to everything that Gordon had been through with it.After finding north on the compass, Gordon started to dig and was able tomake his destination without having to take more than a few short rests. Herealised that he had been quite close to the edge of the cliff so it had onlybeen a matter of digging his way to the side and breaking through. He felt the air rush in as he squeezed himself out of his tunnel and through asmall hole he’d made into the open. He took a deep breath and savoured themoment for a while before he knew he had to set off straight away or he wouldbe left behind. He would never get off the planet. He twisted himself round sohe was upside down and looking straight up the cliff face. There was a fairdistance still to go but he reckoned he could make it without tools. He found something to grab hold of and, using all his strength, pulled himself vertical so he was hanging onto the side of the cliff with an 80 ft drop belowhim. It only took one peek down to make Gordon scared. Really scared. Heswore silently to himself. How had he got himself into this mess? One slip andhe would die. One muck-up and it would have all been for nothing. Everythingwas at stake. He found other potential footholds and, fighting his fear, spread his body out sohe was resting or hanging onto four sturdy rocks around him. He didn’t want tomove and his mind was telling him to look down but at the same time, lookingcould cost him his life - something he wasn’t prepared to give. Then, his right feet slipped. He didn’t look down, but he did look up and acombination of the sand particles in the air, hitting his face, and the movingclouds caused him to feel momentarily imbalanced. His feet moved on impulseto try and keep himself steady but one slid off the foothold and he foundhimself loosing his other footing as well. Only his arms were keeping him upagainst the cliff face. His heart was hammering and his arms were shaking. If he didn’t find his footing again soon, he would have no choice but to let go. His
