is right around
the corner.
Thanksgiving is a time we are reminded to be thankful
for the people and blessings in our lives.
Despite some of the difhcult challenges !'ve had to
face in 2013, ! am choosing to be positive and grateful
for all the good things in my life. ! have an incredible
job where ! get to express my passion for health and
wellness. ! have an incredible family. ! have a man in
my life who is the kindest, nicest man !'ve ever known -
one who loves unconditionally and teaches me to do the
same. ! am healthy and happy.
After my father passed away in February, ! again
was reminded that our time on earth is a gift. We can't
waste that time with negativity and bad habits. We
must focus on the positive. What are some things you
are thankful for? Write them down. Tell someone. Feel
the overhow of gratitude wash over you. !t feels good,
doesn't it?
This month, we continue our focus on health and

I HAD THE privilege of
hosting hve very special people
last month. We invited four of our
top NaxForm hnalists along with
our 2013 NaxForm Life Challenge
Champion, David Calhoun, to our
corporate headquarters in Orange
County, California for two days of
photo and video shoots.
They all hew in Thursday
night from different parts of the
country: North Carolina, Colorado,
Las vegas and the Pacihc
Northwest. Friday morning, they
were picked up bright and early
from their hotel and escorted hrst
class in a limousine to our corporate ofhce. We met the group out front, and as
we entered the building, our hve v!Ps were greeted with a standing ovation by our
staff. This was one of many highlights over the weekend. To see their reactions
and feel their overwhelming sense of accomplishment sent chills through my body.
They were being recognized and applauded for all of the hard work they had put in
over the past several months, and they deserved it.
After hair and make up, they were like kids in a candy store during their
individual studio photo and video shoots - each one beaming with pride and
genuine excitement at what was taking place. Each of them told me during the
shoot that the whole experience just felt surreal, that they could not believe it was
them, in these bodies taking part in this. They were the center of attention, all
eyes on them. They loved it. And the camera loved them. ! could not believe how
great they each looked, and more amazingly, knowing where they had all come
from just nine months ago. David, Brian, JoLynn, !ngrie and Arpana are all going
to be the focus of the Nax Nuscle 201+ campaign that will be revealed in January.
Saturday we headed up to the world-famous hard-core gym Netrohex in Long
Beach for the training photo shoots. The group had an absolute blast shooting
at the gym and loved the vibe and people there. That night we had an awesome
celebration dinner where they were able to let loose a little bit on their diets and
enjoy themselves. !nspirational stories were shared about the struggles that were
overcome and the newfound joy and energy they all felt. The best part was seeing
the bonds that were created between each one of them, knowing that they had all
achieved something signihcant in their lives and the fact that they were all at that
table, at that moment, was not by mistake.
! look forward to seeing them continue to achieve their goals. Nax Nuscle
couldn't be more blessed and thankful to have each of them representing our
brand and what we stand for.

FROM THE ARMY
TO THE STAGE:
MY FITNESS
JOURNEY
My journey with ftness began in the U.S.
Army. As an enlisted female soldier, I had
something to prove. In basic training, I
always pushed myself and never gave up.
I was selected to be the one to represent
the females of my platoon in competitions
against the others. While learning Spanish at
the Defense Language Institute, I carried on
in usual fashion.
During a typical afternoon of 1st Sergeant
physical training, I was carrying a 5 gallon
jug full of water and pulling a fellow soldier
up a hill because we soldiers never leave a
fallen comrade. After what felt like a mile
I began experiencing abdominal pain and
I have been unable to run ever since. I was
later honorably discharged from the Army as
a result and immediately pursued my dream
of becoming an attorney.
In the two years it took to obtain my
Bachelors degree I struggled to fnd a
workout regimen that worked with my
ailment. Ten law school inficted upon
me a kind of stress I had never imagined
possible. As I put in 16 hour days of class,
studying, and work at three jobs, quick
and dirty became my preferred method of
nutrition.
It didnt take long to feel sick and
depressed. Law school compromised my
relationships, health and sense of well-being.
In January 2012, I made it my New Years
resolution to improve my mind, body and
soul. Competing at a bodybuilding show
would be the perfect symbol of an improved
body. I enlisted the aid of a coach and
much to my surprise was informed that I
was better suited to compete in the fgure
division.
When I started training to be a fgure
competitor I was the defnition of skinny;
absolutely undefned in every way. In order
to put on size I lifted very heavy weights,
ate upwards of 3,400 calories of clean food
daily, and utilized Max Muscle supplements
such as BCAAs, Glutamine and MaxPro.
Within a matter of six months of hard work,
my body transformed and I looked like a
completely diferent person. No longer could
anybody justifably call me skinny. Finally I
knew what it felt like to be a curvy woman.
From day one on my path to becoming
a fgure competitor, I have used Max
Muscle products to improve my physique.
Trough proper training, nutrition and
supplementation, I placed 1st at my frst
fgure competition. In addition, one week
after graduating law school, I competed
at my 2nd fgure competition and placed
3rd in my class. Competing in two fgure
competitions while in law school, hands
down, was the most challenging experience
of my life. However, my experience has
taught me that I can and will do anything
I set my mind to. With that belief in mind,
I am in the process of starting up my own
law frm, conducting personal training part-
time, and representing Max Muscle Eugene,
Oregon.

REACHING OUT A
HELPING HAND TO
KIDS IN NEED
In Bend, Oregon, there is an organization
called Oregon Youth Challenge. It is much like
a military school for at risk youth on the verge
of dropping out of high school or even worse,
being locked up in Juvenile Detention centers.
The OYC is a no non-sense, all business run
schooling system for these kids. They all wear
military fatigues, everything is 'Sir, Yes Sir" and
they are taught to be polite and respectful.
They are treated as if they were in boot camp.
And that is what these kids need and want:
structure!
Every six months, OYC get new recruits
from all over the state of Oregon and we are
invited to come out and talk with them about
what we do and what are some of the paths
these kids can take when preparing to enter
back into normal civilian life. Many of the kids
get really excited when we come out because
we load them up with goodies and they all
love the magazines! Many of them take a few
different ones because they say it motivates
them to not only get better physically, but
mentally!

kids because it forces us to realize that not
only can we help people in the store, there is

On Saturday, April 27, from 12 to 4 p.m., friends and tness fans joined me at Santa Rita Cantina
in Austin, Texas, for the my cover model launch party for the May 2013 Issue of Max Sports &
Fitness magazine. Those who came to celebrate posed for photos with me and picked up their
signed copy of the magazine. I had a wonderful time taking pictures with everyone, sharing in
food and drink and celebrating MS&F's contributions to educating people on health and tness
with its monthly magazine. Big "Thank You" to Santa Rita Cantina for hosting the event in the Austin
Escarpment Village location and another big "Thank You" to MS&F! I am so proud to have graced
the cover and appreciate you allowing that to happen.

a way for us to help people in areas that you
normally do not get to enter.
Many of these kids have just been brought
up in bad circumstances and seem to be in
survival mode. Because of that, it has forced
them to make decisions that may have not
been the best for them, hence why they
end up at the Oregon Youth Challenge. It is
humbling for us to meet these kids and be told
that they are happy to see us. It just reminds
me that what we do is worth more than just
supplements!
I would highly recommend other Max
Muscle franchisees or managers to reach out
to these programs. It will leave you with a
sense of giving back. And you never know,
you can have a major impact on these kids.

Most of us might associate ber with
helping our bodies eliminate waste. The
elimination process is very important for
maintaining a healthy body, but dietary
ber does much more than that. Fiber
helps us maintain a healthy weight and
lowers your risk of diabetes and heart
disease.
What is dietary ber?
The best way to describe dietary hber
is that it is simply portions of foods
that do not get absorbed. They pass
through your stomach, intestines
and colon and are eliminated. There
are two types of hber: soluble and
insoluble.
Soluble ber dissolves in water to
form a gel-like material. It can help
lower blood cholesterol and glucose
levels. Soluble hber is found in oats,
peas, beans, apples, citrus fruits,
carrots, barley and phylum.
Insoluble ber promotes the
movement of waste through your
digestive system. It can soften and
swell the stool for better elimination
while cleaning the intestinal walls.
Whole-wheat hour, wheat bran,
nuts, beans and vegetables, such as
caulihower, green beans and potatoes,
are good sources of insoluble hber.
Also, many plant-based foods, such
as oatmeal and beans, contain both
soluble and insoluble hber.

High-Fiber Diet Benets
Maintain regular bowel movements. Fiber
will also make the process quicker and
help control constipation.
Help you maintain bowel health. As we
age, it is very important to keep these
internal organs healthy and clean to
minimize the risk of disease.
Lowers cholesterol levels. Soluble hber
found in beans, oats, haxseed and
oat bran may help lower total blood
cholesterol levels by lowering low-
density lipoprotein ("bad") cholesterol
levels. Studies have shown that hber
may have other heart-health benehts,
such as reducing blood pressure and
inhammation.
Helps control blood sugar levels. In people
with diabetes, soluble hber can slow the
absorption of sugar and help improve
blood sugar levels. !nsoluble hber may
also reduce the risk of developing type 2
diabetes.

Behind Video Game Addiction?
Worried about your partners hard core gaming? You should be, if they are playing games to escape
from daily life, to gain rewards or to socialize with other people, say researchers from the University of
Missouri, who studied individual motives that contribute to unhealthy game play.
The researchers found that problematic video game use had much more to do with a persons
reasons for playing games than with actual time spent playing. People who play games to avoid
problems or to pretend to be other people are most at risk for addictive gaming. And the more they
play, the more problems it causes in their lives.
Those who play to socialize with others are
also at risk, such as in games like World of
Warcraft, where players join teams or guilds.
An obligation to join teammates on Saturday
night or be cut from the team can interfere
with real life obligations, such as spending time
with the family.
A third motive for playing that can lead to
addictive gaming? Those who are fueled by
getting to the next level or collecting all of
the in-game items, such as with games like
Farmville or Diablo. The researchers hope that
understanding the motives that contribute to
unhealthy adult game play can help counselors
to identify and treat those who are addicted to
video games.

When you were a kid, did your
mom forbid you to drink coffee for
fear your brain would be damaged?
She may have been right, according
to a study supported by the Swiss
National Science Foundation.
According to the researchers,
caffeine, found in sodas and energy
drinks as well as coffee beverages
freely consumed by many children
and young adults interfere with the
deep sleep needed during puberty for
brain development and maturation.
While the study was done on rats,
and rat brains differ from human
brains, there are enough parallels
between rodent and human
development for the research to
raise concern about caffeines effect
on children. Until further research
is done, it may be wise to limit
your childs intake of caffeinated
beverages.

Be Your 'Cup of Tea?'
The English are well known for their fondness for tea. In fact, the average British
citizen takes in about six or more cups of tea each day. A lesser known fact is that the
afternoon tea ritual may be a healthy habit! A new Australian study showed that the
intake of three or more cups of black tea each day was associated with a small but
signicant drop in blood pressure.
Study participants in the University of Western Australia in Perth research were
divided into two groups: one drinking three cups of black tea daily, and the second
group drinking the same amount of a non-tea caffeinated beverage. At the end of the
six-month study, the tea-drinkers had an average drop in systolic blood pressure (the
top number) of two to three points, and a drop of about two points in diastolic blood
pressure (the bottom number).
While this is seemingly a minor change in blood pressure reading, the researchers
said that even this small drop in blood pressure readings among the general population
would be associated with a 10 percent reduction in the prevalence of hypertension and
a 7-10 percent reduction in the risk for heart disease and stroke.

Almost everyone has
had a headache from time
to time. And for most
people, an occasional
headache doesnt interfere
with life too much. But
if youre experiencing
headaches more days than
not, and especially if your
headaches are interfering
with work or play, its time
to stop suffering and start
taking action so you
can live most of your days
headache-free.
Chronic daily headaches,
according to Susan
Hutchinson, MD, Director
of Orange County Migraine
and Headache Center
in Irvine, California, are
dehned by their frequency.
Three to hve percent of
adults experience chronic
headaches, said Dr.
Hutchinson. This means
that they have a headache
15 or more days a month
for 3 or more months in
duration.
While there are many
types of headaches,
she added, the two
most common primary
headaches, or headaches
that are not caused by an
underlying condition like
an infection or a tumor,
are tension headaches and
migraine headaches. While
both cause pain, they have
different characteristics.
A tension headache
is universal, said Dr.
Hutchinson. It causes
mild to moderate pain
that may feel like pressure
or tightening around
your head. But it doesnt
interfere with your ability to
get to the gym.
Migraines, on the other
hand, she said, are
less common but more
debilitating - you can't
work out when you have a
migraine.
A migraine headache is
usually one-sided rather
than an all over headache
like a tension headache,
said Dana S. Simpler, MD,
an internist in private
practice in the Baltimore,
Maryland area for 26 years.
Its often over one or the
other eye, she explained.
Sometimes the pain is
preceded by an `aura,' or a
visual disturbance, such as
a light hashing in front of
your eyes, or a dark spot
that interferes with vision.
Although not always
true, she added, a
migraine headache is often
associated with nausea,
light and sound sensitivity.
While migraines affect both
men and women, they are
more prevalent among
women than among men.
While both migraines
and tension headaches
can become chronic,
chronic migraines are more
common than chronic
tension headaches, said
Dr. Hutchinson. And
because it's sometimes
hard to tell which kind of
headache condition youre
experiencing (some people
have a mixture of both
types), its important to

by a healthcare provider, she added.

testing to exclude underlying
conditions, such as a computerized
tomography (CT) scan or magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) scan,
can help to pin down a diagnosis.
Following the evaluation, your doctor
can help you to come up with a
treatment plan. This will likely include
one of a number of prescription
medications, such as injections
of Onabotulinum Toxin A (Botox),
currently the only FDA-approved
treatment for chronic migraine.
In the meantime, you can help
yourself and your doctor by
keeping a headache calendar to

help not only to identify the type of

contribute to your headaches, such
as inadequate sleep, hydration or
nutrients, or excess caffeine, alcohol

therapist or other health professionals
in order to make these changes, said

with chronic headaches should
review lifestyle factors and consider
getting help in a multidisciplinary

Emotional tension It doesnt have to be something serious, like a
divorce or a death in the family. Things such as a big project due at work
or school, a poor nights sleep or excitement or anxiety over an upcoming
event, can all cause emotional tension.

Migraine Headache Triggers
Foods While not true for all migraine sufferers, particular foods may
trigger an attack. Common food culprits are ripened cheeses, chocolate,
anything fermented, pickled or marinated, foods containing monosodium
glutamate (MSG), processed meats like bologna, pepperoni, salami and
hot dogs, caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.
Hormonal changes Such as premenstrual or postpartum changes.
Certain medications Like birth control pills and certain
antidepressants.
In addition, overuse of pain medications (more than three times per
week) such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can trigger chronic headaches.

Do you experience sudden, severe headaches following strenuous activity such as weight lifting,
running or even sex? If so, you may have an exertional headache. According to the National
Headache Foundation, most exertional headaches are harmless, but some are caused by disorders
such as abnormalities in blood vessels within the brain. If you develop a severe headache directly
following physical activity, you should check in with your doctor to rule out underlying problems. And if
things check out ne, you can ask about medications you can use prior to exertional activities to blast
headaches before they start.

While most headache sufferers use over-the-counter
or prescription pain medications at least some of
the time, there are some non-medication therapies
that can help to safely alleviate headache pain. A
few to try:
Hot and Cold Treatment
According to the National Headache Foundation,
the pain of chronic headaches can be lessened with
ice and heat. While those with migraine headaches
tend to prefer cold packs applied to the forehead
and temples, and tension headache sufferers hnd
relief with warm packs applied to the posterior head
and neck, preference for cold or heat is an individual
choice.
A recent study, performed by musculoskeletal pain
specialist Giresh Kanji, PhD, Chair of the Wellington
Education and Self Treatment Research Group and
also for the New Zealand Pain Foundation, found that
sauna treatments of 20 minutes three times a week
for eight weeks had the same effect as hot and cold
packs. Pain, including headache pain, is amplihed by
stress chemicals, such as adrenaline, noradrenaline
and serotonin in the brain and spinal cord, said Dr.
Kanji. Heat, such as in a sauna, can produce an
overall reduction in the output of stress chemicals
over six to eight weeks, which, in turn, can reduce
pain, he explained.
According to Dr. Kanji, although his sauna treatment
study was done on tension type headaches, it is likely that
heat should help other forms of headache.
Connective Tissue Therapy
Connective tissue, or more specihcally fascia,
surrounds every structure of your body,
including bones, organs, muscles and
nerves. Its made up of collagen,
elastin and other hbers that are
bathed in cellular huid, and
works like a river to help
transport oxygen, nutrients
and waste from cell to cell,
according to Sue Hitzmann,
MS, CST, NMT, a somatic-
movement educator and
manual therapist,. But
stress can get trapped in the
connective tissue, she said,
causing migraine and chronic
tension headaches.
Connective tissue therapy may
consist of deep tissue massage with a
manual therapist, or a hands off series
of exercises using a soft body roller and small balls called
Myofascial Energetic Length Technique (MELT), developed
by Hitzmann and featured on The Dr. Oz Show. MELT
is a very simple technique that you can learn to do to
rehydrate connective tissue and release stress trapped
and stuck within your body, like sediment in a river, said
Hitzmann. It keeps your connective tissue stable and
functioning.

Fish Oil
Recent studies, such as one carried
out at the University of Cincinnati with

containing omega-3 fatty acids EPA and
DHA may reduce the frequency and
severity of migraine attacks. While most
of the studies utilized large amounts of
hsh oil capsules (more than six 1,200
mg capsules daily), it doesnt hurt to

How To Deal with Diet Saboteurs

Dieting is a challenging
endeavor. You have to plan your
meals, document your intake and
eat consistently. Many of us will
have to skip the Starbucks line,
bring our own bag lunch and
hurry to the gym instead of happy
hour. Successfully dieting would
be quite possible if you worked
in a gym, cooked all your meals,
limited your party engagements
and was surrounded by tness-
minded people. While ideal, its
not realistic for the majority of us.
The majority of dieters have a
family who may or may not be on
the same htness page. Some have
friends who love to party and indulge
in a drink or four! Nany of us attend
events and family engagements when
food is plenty and support is not.
All of us will struggle with opposing
voices that fear the positive changes
you are making in your life. These
are called diet saboteurs," and they
are the things in your environment
that can and will destroy your diet.
Those who are closest.

tempt you the most! They can come
in the form of your spouse, sibling or
best friend. They will complain when
you train, order your favorite food and
bring home leftovers and place it right
next to your Tupperware. Its tough
to overcome limited support, but you
can overcome it by encouraging them
to set goals with you. If they refuse,
then try and spend limited time with
them and build a new support circle
around you that will be strong enough
to tackle the lack of support you are
receiving from those closest to you.
Dont go to the grocery
store hungry.
Eating consistently is one of the
main rules in healthy dieting. You
need to consume meals throughout
the day to ensure you are fueling
your body properly. When meals are
skipped, people tend to overeat at
their next meal. This can be especially
problematic when grocery shopping
and your eyes are as big as your
hunger. Overcome this challenge by
keeping trail mix in your car, bringing
protein shakes in your bag and even
stopping for healthy fast food options
if you are unprepared. Overeating and
under-eating work hand-in-hand so
prepare yourself for the possibilities of
busy and stressful days.
Finish all your food.
For those who have children, meal
times can be challenging because
often times your child will have
leftovers that leave
you wanting to hnish.
Sometimes its a handful
of goldhsh crackers or the
rest of a peanut butter
and jelly sandwich. In
order to ensure you dont
break your diet, the best
thing to do is pack their
leftovers for future meals
or throw it away. Small
cheats here and there
are not benehcial in the
long run.
Its just one drink.
Social situations can be
tough, especially when
alcohol is involved. While
abstaining sometimes
seems like the best solution, avoiding
your friends and becoming aloof can
be taxing to your personal life. Its
important to create a lifestyle change
in which you are able to have a life
while also dieting. Dominic Current, a
natural competitive bodybuilder and

Oregon, suggests faking it, until you
make it! I order drinks that look like
drinks. I am not a big drinker to begin
with, so this practice has worked for
me many, many times. I found that
if I order just water with a lot of ice
or even a watered down diet soda,
people ask me what I am drinking. I
tell them vodka and water or a lean
rum and coke they leave me alone.
Scope the menu.
When dining out, there are several
food choices, but probably only hve
options that really meet your diet
requirements. There are two areas
of the menu that are safe to peruse:
the salad and healthy choices section.
Dont tempt yourself by reading other
parts of the menu. Order a calorie-
free beverage, order your healthy
meal and stay focused on your long-
term htness goal.
Give yourself time.
In changing your lifestyle, you need to
give yourself time time to become
acclimated to a new diet and time

nothing more than a learned lifestyle,
so I suggest that trainees who are
trying to eat a healthier diet slowly
acclimate to new ways of eating over
the course of two months. Slow and
steady changes are more manageable
than complete overhauls.

for those making transformations this
year is in one word: time. Give and
allow yourself time: time training, time
cooking and time for real results to
happen. So many people want it to be
fast, but you have to tell yourself the
faster it goes away, the faster it comes

Saul Mendoza has known since he
was a small child that he wanted to
serve in the military. Now, he has
put in nine years with the U.S. Air

Its all I have ever wanted to
do, Mendoza said. I will serve
until it kills me, or I am too old and
frail to do my job. As long as I keep
up my htness, that won't be for a
while.
Mendoza spent eight years in
the Air Force as a c-130 engine
mechanic. Now, he works as a drill
sergeant for at-risk youth. Because
physical htness is such a big part of
what he does for a living, Mendoza
said it is important to stay in peak

Lani Hefel originally joined the Army
National Guard in 2002 for the college
money. Eleven years later, she said she
still serves with honor and pride at
Camp Dodge in Iowa.Ive met so many
people and made so many great friends
that being a soldier is who I am, Hefel
said. I love being able to serve my
country.
One month ago, Hefel returned from
Afghanistan. While she was there,
Hefel placed in the womens top three
in every 5K race. She competed in a
female-only 500-pound club where
she placed second in the lightweight
division, lifting a total of 550 pounds.
Hefel, who loves to be active,
enjoys running, hiking, weight lifting,
biking, rock climbing and kayaking.
In the past, she struggled to balance
running with weight lifting. Although
she completed nine marathons, Hefel

Recent Study Supports More
Protein for More Muscle

It appears that increased protein protects against


muscle breakdown during diet and weight loss
programs. The purpose of this study was to determine
the effects of varying levels of dietary protein on
body composition and muscle protein synthesis
during energy decit periods. Researchers at the U.S.
Army Research Institute at Natick, MA conducted a
randomized controlled trial of 39 adults assigned the
subjects diets providing protein at 0.8 Recommended
Dietary Allowance [RDA], 1.6 (2x-RDA), and 2.4
(3x-RDA) grams per kilograms of body weight per day
for 31 days.. Researchers found that the proportion
of weight loss due to reductions in fat-free mass was
signicantly lower and the loss of fat mass was higher
in those receiving
2-RDA and 3-
RDA compared to
RDA. Researchers
concluded that
consuming dietary
protein at levels
exceeding the RDA
may protect fat-
free mass during
short-term weight

Some critics claim Tribulus terrestris may increase the urinary testosterone/
epitestosterone (T/E) ratio, which may place athletes at risk of a positive drug test.
To test this hypothesis, researchers at the Southern Cross University, NSW, Australia
conducted a study to determine the effect of T. terrestris on strength, fat-free mass,
and the urinary T/E ratio during 5 weeks of preseason training in elite rugby league
players. Twenty-two players were match-paired and randomly assigned to either a
T. terrestris (450mg/d) or placebo group. All subjects performed structured heavy
resistance training as part of the clubs preseason preparations. After 5 weeks of

Scientic evidence supports that high protein diets favor


weight loss and its maintenance. Leucine, as a member of
the branched-chain amino acid family, is hypothesized as
playing a signicant role. To investigate this, researchers
conducted a study in obese mice to look at the impact of
leucine supplementation on energy balance and associated
metabolic changes. Mice were fed either a normal caloric
diet while receiving the amino acid leucine or no leucine
in drinking water. Researchers found that the mice fed the
leucine supplementation had decreased body weight and
fat mass. Additionally, mice supplemented with leucine had
improved glucose tolerance, increased leptin sensitivity
and lower respiratory quotient. These research scientists
concluded that leucine supplementation might represent an
adjuvant benecial nutritional therapy during

because it improves lipid and
glucose metabolism and restores
leptin sensitivity in previously
