 For too long the very serious, very substantive contributions of women, in particular Protestant women, to resistance to Hitler 
s Reich have gone overlooked. Gailus and Vollnhals correct that shortcoming of historical research in a genuinely gripping series of historical vignettes which relate the stories of the women who made a real difference in the 1930
s and 40
s. The eleven stories which make up this book are related movingly and touchingly. It
s impossible to comprehend what these women, and men, faced as they stood up for the good and true and right in an era and place where too many turned a blind eye to the very few who were perfectly evil. And that
s what makes their courage even more astonishing. Take, for instance, the daughter of Adolf von Harnack (surely a name known to every biblical scholar and church historian and systematician):
