Monthly Natural Gas Production Report with data for May 2009Released: July 31, 2009Next Release: August 31, 2009
Data presented in the table below are monthly natural gas gross withdrawals estimated from datacollected on the EIA-914 survey. Gross withdrawals are converted to marketed natural gasproduction which is reported on theEIA website in the Natural Gas Navigator, and in the NaturalGas Monthly and Annual reports. Marketed production is calculated by subtracting gas used forrepressuring, quantities vented and flared, and nonhydrocarbon gases removed in treating orprocessing operations from gross withdrawals.Production for the lower 48 States declined 0.8 percent in May despite production gains of about 2percent in Louisiana and Oklahoma. The production gains in Louisiana were from new wells in theHaynesville shale, and from workovers and curtailed wells placed back on production. Theremaining areas’ production was down due to prices, plant maintenance, and equipment problems. All estimates, except as footnoted, are based on the adjusted ratio estimate method, which isexplained in the Background and Methodology report. Readers are encouraged to review thesereports to better understand all aspects of the EIA-914 survey. The Data Files contain initial andrevised production estimates for each month (revisions are based on company resubmissions andlate reports) and response rates by month.
Updated Note about 2009 Natural Gas Production
As we noted in our prior “Note About 2009 Natural Gas Production,” the combined effects of elements of ourpublished methodologymean that production estimates for some States were notcomparable for December 2008 and January 2009. In particular, the annual movement of companies in and out of the sample of natural gas well operators and the change in calibrationperiod used for estimation combined to show a decrease in production in Texas from December2008 to January 2009, while data from the companies sampled in both years indicated a smallincrease - an increase confirmed in later data based on reports to State agencies. We areconducting a comprehensive review of ways to improve our natural gas production estimateswhich is covering not only sampling and estimation, but also other issues such as sudden changesin production from previously nonsampled operators and comparisons with other data sources. Weplan to publish a single set of revisions to our estimates for 2008 and 2009 when the review iscompletelater in 2009, alongwith documentation of any methodological changes. For the interim, we have posted a moredetailed discussionof these issues.Technical Contact: GaryLong 214-720-6182
