OIL LEAKat Joraku-an

(Beecher House)
This June, we discovered that the lines hooked up tothe fuel oil tanks beneath Joraku-an were leaking inmany places due to old, corroded connectors. Oilwas seeping through the soil across the lawn, makingits way down the hill, and threatening to contaminateBeecher Lake, which ows into the Beaverkill Riverand its tributaries throughout the Catskills.
Fortunately, the leak was dis

covered and taken care of by ateam of specialists before the oilseeped into the lake. All of thecontaminated soil has been re

moved from the premises anddisposed of in an ecological

ly responsible manner by a professional environmental agency. Addi

tional soil samples will be taken and examined by a geologist for tracesof contaminants, and removed if necessary. The fuel tank beneath Jor

tery and the gatehouse, will likewise have to be emptied and removed. This process has been very time-consuming and extremely costly. So far,Dai Bosatsu Zendo has incurred expenses totaling more than $15,000for the clean-up effort at Joraku-an alone. The removal of the other tankson the property is projected to cost another $15,000. Despite havinglaunched our 2009 fundraising campain only weeks ago, these un

foreseen expenses are far beyond anything that we have planned for inour yearly budget, and drastically exceed our typical operating costs.Dai Bosatsu Zendo depends on the sangha to come together and marchon through this unexpected turn of events. We are deeply grateful forthe ongoing generosity and support which has enabled our Dharmapractice to ourish and grow for 33 years, and sincerely hope that we maycontinue together, unimpeded by these challenging circumstances. Yourtax-deductible donations are especially appreciated at this crucial time.
